How to limit traffic on LAN or control voltage on USB?

    Hello!

I have a weird issue. My work computer is an old HP ProLiant Server originally running Windows 7 Professional and I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro back when it was free to do so. Immediately the HP NC107i PCIe Gigabit Server Adapter stopped working (known incompatibility with Windows 10) and no matter what driver I tried it never worked (it cannot detect the LAN cable and hence doesn't attempt to use it). So I had to add a USB to Ethernet adapter with the following description: ASIX AX88772B USB2.0 to Fast Ethernet Adapter. Naturally I have shared some folders in my computer and a printer. When a colleague tried to print on the printer or copy some data from the shared folders (when LAN traffic goes high) I see that all the USB ports reset and I'm offline for several seconds until the USB LAN card is detected and connects again. This happens too often that is annoying. I also see this issue when I try to connect to our database using our ERP application. So I need either a program to control the behavior of USB devices (how much power each one is allowed to use etc) or to control LAN traffic between my PC and the others. Is there anything?

    Thank you in advance.

PS: Tried to use a different USB port, nothing changed. Tried a different USB to Ethernet adapter (Realtek based) it got much worse, I could not even open a web site!. Anything else?

    Hi

Just a thought, have you tried a wireless USB adapter to check if you can remain connected that way. It could even be faster with 802.11n @ 300 Mbit/s vs 10/100 Lan @ 100 Mbit/s

Also, have you checked that the properties of the USB adapter are not set to
'Allow computer to turn off this device to save power'

and did you disable the onboard Lan?

I tried a WLAN USB dongle, it was rather slow and occasional had the same issue (USB port reset). The "Allow computer to turn off this device" is unchecked. I haven't disabled onboard LAN, I will but don't think it will make any difference. Thank you for your quick reply.

to be honest, if the wifi adapter is slow and disconnecting, I would be tempted to test the USB ports further with a hardware plugin device, here.
Have you tried updating the USB drivers?

Can you advise on the BIOS version and if updates are available?

Looking at the LAN hardware "HP NC107i" , many others had the same issue, but resolved it with driver updates for windows 10, so it may not be a compatibility issue.

Could also try setting the USB Selective suspend setting to Disabled.

In the BIOS, do you have options for USB 3 support?

If so, can you disable it or select Just USB 1.0/2.0

Has it got any expansion capability via PCIe for example? New NIC or even USB 3.1 ports might do the job (if there's the chipset support). Pretty cheap for a basic PCIe expansion card.

Hello! The server is a small cube box and to reach the PCIe port to install any NIC would require too much effort. I might eventually do it, but I would rather avoid it. I have tried many drivers for USB and onboard LAN card, nothing seems to work. Also the USB selective suspend is disabled. I uninstalled some old printer and other unused software and today I haven't seen any issue. Let's hope it is better now. I'm currently running v1803, I could some time upgrade to v1809 but I'm not sure there is a compatible driver for the onboard LAN card. If there is I would be glad. Anyone having a PC or server with this card working in Windows 10? How did you did that?

If you've got it all working with 1803 I wouldn't upgrade to 1809...
With older hardware major OS upgrades are always going to be a bit of lottery.
I'm still trying to get an old HP Laserjet 6L printer to work with W10 that prints straight off the bat with Linux Mint.
Tried absolutely everything, every bit of internet wisdom, no joy.

If you are using a USB to parallel adapter make sure you change whatever port is configured to LPT1 for compatibility reasons. This is done from the ports section in Device Manager. Also make sure you enable support for legacy devices for this port, you never know. If you are using an onboard parallel port on your PC, make sure you configure it to ECP in BIOS. If already ECP, try other modes such as EPP or standard, but ECP should work for most cases. For compatibility reasons choose the default configuration for LPT1 (address 378, IRQ 7, DMA 1 or 3). Also enable Legacy devices support. Remember that a parallel port is not plug and play. You must have the printer connected and switched on (online) before switching on your computer, otherwise it won't be detected by Windows. Even then you might have to add a printer to force Windows detect it.
