    SMB permissions puzzle?

I am using Macrium Reflect to backup to a Samba network share.
The .tmp backup file is created and written successfully, but cannot be renamed to its final name.
I tried a manual rename which is refused because I need to be authorised by S-1-5-21-<digits>-<digits>-<digits>-3022. Looks like a permissions problem. However, the SID mentioned, which is the owner of the file, doesn't seem to exist, according to wmic.

I checked the permissions of files and folders, and apart from the owner, all permissions are set correctly.
I tried to change the owner of the file, but this is refused because it cannot be determined whether the computer the file resides on was added to a domain.

I can create, rename and remove files manually.

    Any clue?

This sounds like a permissions issue on your storage device that hosts the share. The share permissions should be set to inherit so that they retain the Windows permissions on the storage device.

The storage device doesn't know about windows, it has no such setting.

    Hi

Where is the storage device connected to?
If it is connected to a windows 10 PC, how does Windows not know about it?

It is connected to a Fritzbox 7581.

Your post is a little vague so a few questions.

    • Are you are connecting a USB or Network Device to the Fritzbox 7581 and setting up as a NAS ?
    • Macrium is running on Windows 10, if so what version?
    • Are all workgroups the same for permissions
    • What are backing up to the Fritzbox 7581 share?
    • Have you tried connecting a USB, Network or internal backup device to Windows 10 and backing up direct to that to confirm if you can achieve a backup and rename as per your OP?

The Fritzbox 7581 is basically a router with a few more bells and whistles so you should be able to setup sharing through it's GUI or you may have to setup firewall permissions. Most routers have the ability to connect a USB device to for sharing.

Post back with any results for others to learn from.

    Good Luck

The HDD is connected through USB to the Fritzbox 7581, which is configured as a NAS. I cannot get to the details of Macrium Reflect and WIndows 10 right now, will let you know. The laptop I am backing up and working from and the Fritzbox are in the same workgroup. I will check out your last suggestion as soon as I can. All I can say for now is that this has worked on an older FritzBox.

Understand your frustrations, and there are many updates and idiosyncrasies that can produce hair removing acts.
You state that the HDD is configured as a NAS, so there must be configuration settings to modify !

Have you tried to backup to this new Fritzbox before? Is this the first time setup?
If its a first time setup, it could be a firmware issue !
What SMB File sharing protocol does the Fritzbox support - SMB CIFS 1.0 , 2.0, 3.0 ?

Have you enabled SMB CIFS 2.0?
Do you have SMB Direct enabled?

Sorry for the bombardment of questions but it helps build a picture of your system/setup

It is the first setup. The Fritzbox supports SMB 1.0 only.

What annoys me to no end is that Macrium Reflect reports that daily backups complete successfully. Only looking further into the logs reveals that backups couldn't be renamed, due to permissions problems. So, for one month or so, no good backups were made, in silence.

ok, looking at the logs, does the image get created as tmp, but then not able to be renamed?

if so, the this may be Macrium issue with the Image Guardian installation "MIG" in version 7.1 btw, what version of Macrium are you running?

The MIG software in 7.1 protects images and will prevent unauthorised modifying of Macrium backup files on local and USB volumes.

To test the theory, turn off MIG and run a backup to see if it gets renamed.
