    Missing Network lists.

About 1 - 2 weeks ago my 2x PC's and 2x Laptops (all on windows 10) suddenly lost the ability to display available network lists.
I have looked through numerous threads on the subject, and tried most of the suggested work arounds without success.
I have made no software or hardware changes recently. The only alteration made was me changing the router channel from '4' to auto.

Any suggestions / comments welcomed to overcome this irritation.
    Thanks in advance
    C
PS, has there been a microsoft update that has caused problems recently??

Make sure you have SMB 1.0 enabled in "Turn Windows features on or off"

    Isn't that a security issue?

Yes. Some devices like switches and routers, which offer a simpe sharing of a storage device, can only use SMBv1, due to memory availability on the device. You may never see SMBv2/3 or nextGen SMB on those devices, because they are not ghat robust. A Raspberry Pi does a better job acting as a NAS for storage devices, than say a Gateway or switch with storage share capabilities.

    Hi.

May I ask what make and model of router?

Did you just update the firmware and then this happened?
Did you change the channel back, reboot the router and test again?
Did you try turning off the router and see if the PC's can discover any other networks?

No and Yes but depends on your level of security in place and how it is setup, and what you need to see in network devices.

There was an issue with SMB 1.0 back in 2016 but Microsoft issued a fix for the vulnerability. However, the technology is old and you cannot make a rolls royce out of a mini, so issues may still exist until identified.

If you want to be more secure, then you need to use the SMB 2.0 , 3.0 protocols.

To check if these are already enabled run powershell in command mode and enter:
    Code:
    Get-SmbServerConfiguration | Select EnableSMB2Protocol
If "True" is returned then disabling SMB 1.0 (all 3 selections in "Turn Windows features On or Off" and restarting the system should show all compatible network devices, but some devices such as NAS will not show in the network list, but should show in the Storage group.

You would need to map the shared drives on each system to be able to access them or access them via command line each time if you don't map a drive or share. see here how to map a drive. Map a network drive

if the value returned is "False" proceed with the following to enable SMB 2.0

    1. Disable SMB 1.0 (all 3 selections in "Turn Windows features On or Off")
    2. Enable SMB Direct
    3. Restart
    4. run powershell in command mode and enter:
    Code:
    Set-SmbServerConfiguration -EnableSMB2Protocol $true
    5. Restart
    6. All network devices should be visible except some NAS and older technologies. As mentioned above though, they are on the network, just not visible and need to be mapped to access them. Map a network drive
    7. If you need to see the older devices in Network devices, then you need SMB 1.0

I personally don't have SMB 1.0 enabled and have an older and a newer NAS. The older NAS does not show but the shared drives are mapped. The newer NAS does show.

    Your choice...

    Hope this helps.

Thank you everyone for your valued input
Compumind asked - May I ask what make and model of router? -Netgear DGN3500

Did you just update the firmware and then this happened? -NO changes made
Did you change the channel back, reboot the router and test again? -YES did this
Did you try turning off the router and see if the PC's can discover any other networks? YES did this.

There has been a further 'complication' - this morning both Ethernet PC's were connected to the network, however all mobile devices did not connect to network (no networks were showing at all)
Pure guessology on my part - suspect modem /router perhaps????? Had a known working spare in the loft - installed and all has returned to 'normal'.
Will run this for a few days, and come back to the forum and report/update.
I really do appreciate the time contributors have expended on my problem.
    Watch this space.

Interesting. As a litmus test, try reconnecting the old router and performing a reset to factory defaults, then check for any firmware updates. Failing that, a fault may be the cause, but I have not seen this behaviour caused by a router before....

Bear in mind though, this is a Modem Router and resetting to factory defaults, will lose all of your provider and setup details from the router (username, password etc). If you have these written down somewhere and are comfortable setting it back up, then you should be ok.

You have a spare router already setup anyway, so nothing to lose really.

Actually... jl2509's post does have merit.

You do need to go one step at a time, though.

If you are behind the router on a private LAN, keeping SMB 1.0 enabled is generally OK.
In many cases there is an advantage to keep this enabled. For testing at the very least.

Just make sure that your AV and Firewall is up-to-date on all systems connected to this LAN.

Here is my default W10 SMB 1.0 configuration:

Before you reset the router, make a backup of the router configuration (in a file) just in case.
It should be in the Netgear settings.

After all is well, enable SMB 2.0 and re-check. (If not already enabled.)

    FWIW
