    Network Attached Storage (NAS) recommendations

From another thread I posted about accessing the c$ on computers on my network, an idea formed. What if I just had a NAS setup, then any computer on my network (including visitors to the house), can access data.

Now I am looking for suggestions on a decent NAS, with network access (not USB). Any ideas?

I know I probably want one with 2 hard drives in it, for redundancy and to setup a RAID of sorts.
Alas, that might be on the expensive side.

    Regardless, looking for ideas.

    Thanks all

PS: Mods, feel free to move this, if it is in the wrong place. Couldn't decide if this under hardware or networking...

network storage some times referred to as cloud storage for no apparent reason are always expensive since is intended for businesses , the ones that are modifiable / upgrade able / expandable are the most expensive ones actually .

However Seagate and Western Digital have few affordable home solutions that are as is (no modify/upgrade) ranging from 1 TB to 12 TB as advertised (but you would only find 1 TB to 8 TB only being sold) also normal and much faster scsi interface (but you will only find Seagate to release those while WD only claims to produce them) .

They both operate at same speeds : 80 MB/s on normal ones and 120 MB/s on scsi however on multiple access (more than one user access it same time) normal ones struggle significantly .

If you are looking for a solution that actually performs well under multiple access then you should look for ones labeled "Media Servers" / "Streaming Servers" and buying them a couple of scsi drives and activating RAID option which would clone the drives on the fly to make them both capable of providing same content simultaneously aaaaand not to expect that to come any cheap .

Synology are well regarded with their NAS drives.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

Currently, I have a 2TB LaCie, connected via USB 2.0. There is no USB 3.0 on this PC. I started to think about merely getting a USB 3.0 PCI card. But, thought, it might be best to invest in a reasonably priced NAS.

Maybe to keep cost down, I could get a single drive NAS, and also keep a copy of my data on the LaCie. Thus, use the NAS for accessing speed, and the LaCie merely as a backup. Hmm...

+1 for Synology. They make a good NAS system. I bought a DS115 single disk system (w/no disk) and then added my own 2 tb WD Red unit. Their Linux based OS is easy to use, has a great UI, and they keep on top of security updates.

I bought a QNAP, and two Seagate IronWolf drives (1TB each). I will more than likely set it as a RAID 1...

Probably a good idea to do this even if you use RAID1 in case of deleting things by mistake, ransomeware etc. Then you have another backup.
