    Network names are diffent?

Low hours pilot here. I'm going to try another dozen things but does the differing "network" names point to something immediately apparent to you pros?

I'm going thru a book titled "Using Windows 10 as a Server at Home or in a Small Business". I'm using it and other resources for my intro into networking. I'm hacking.

I have two W10Pro64 boxes: S1 and S2. They both are cabled (recently) to my Xfinity router (model TG1682G). A third box, my W7Pro64 is also connected (and has been for a year). All can get to the internet.

In explorer "Network" (as seen on each box - after more than 20 mins on the network and multiple refreshes):
S1: can see S1, S2 and my W7 boxes (Network Internet Access icon via desktop shows "Network 2" connected)
S2: can see ONLY W7 (Network Internet Access icon via desktop shows "Network" connected and a large list of wifi connections available)
W7: can see ONLY W7 (I don't care right now about W7's sense of things. I concerned with S1 and S2.)

I've set the following in both S1 and S2. Login accounts are local. Each local account has admin
privileges. Both S1 and S2 have been rebooted multiple times.

    Private
    Network discovery ON
Automatic setup of network connected devices ON
    File and printer sharing ON

The seems to be something going on with the network names?

    On S1
    MenuPath ->Settings ->Network & Internet ->Ethernet:
    Line 1: Ethernet
    Line 2: Ethernet
    Line 3: Network connected

    On S2
    Line 1: Ethernet
    Line 2: Ethernet
    Line 3: Network 2 connected

Note one says Network, and one says Network 2 (as is shown in Network Internet Access icon listing) . Is this is an indication of a problem?

At one time I did an ipconfig dump on both. I see the masks are identical and IP address correctly
    configured.

I don't know why they are not talking. Any ideas? Thank you.

Make sure that workgroups are the same on both machines.

About "In explorer "Network" (as seen on each box - after more than 20 mins on the network and multiple refreshes)"

That part of File explorer does not work as it used to after updating to Ver 1803. Try typing their locations into the File explorer address bar instead
    \\S1
    \\S2
    \\W7
and it should show computer & the folders you have shared on each one [displayed like subfolders].

    Workgroup names were identical: WORKGROUP.
Access attempt via \\S! was successful. @#$@#$!. ... which will lead to my next question. Stay tuned.
    Thanks all!

Master Browser Election for SaMBa may be the culprit. Plenty of threads on here about fixing it.

Populate Explorer's "Network" quick access tab with available box..

    Per recent thread,

Network names are diffent? Solved - Windows 10 Forums,

I've discovered, was shown, that selecting Explorer's quick access "Network" link won't necessarily
show all private networked boxes out there (some boxes DO show all resources - but this may be a cached
    thing).

In my case I had to enter \\S1 and enter "network credentials" to get
\\S1 to show in the "Network" quick access listing. (Note, the logged in user wishing to
view \\S1 HAS an account on \\S1, the box which did not, by default, show up in Explorer.
The passwords are not the same but I can change that... if it would do any good.)

How do I setup client boxes to populate this "Network" quick access area at
login time? And, aside, just what is/are official" network credentials"?
I am assuming they are accounts/passwords residing on that networked box you want
to access; in this case S1.

I'm planning to visit each client and install one, ONE, login time script (batch, vb, powershell, perl ...
whatever). This visibility is one thing I wish to address.

All boxes are W10P64. This is a private network.

    Thank you.

Windows doesnt look for pcs it asks the master browser which can take time to find pcs. If its not on another takes over use the scanner with all pcs on to find master browser and ensure thats on so it can supply the list NetBScanner - NetBIOS scanner

If you do search for threads about SMB1 do note the explanations about why it has been taken out of normal use.

As an alternative you can map your network drives.
