    Understanding Security Warnings

Apologies, this is a Win XP question (but I don't know a good XP place to ask) and it may be valid for Win 10
Someone sent me some zipped up mp3's via "FileFactory". I have them and all's fine - except as I do stuff
with them I was getting "Open File Security Warning". I've found I can remove this in gpedit.msc and User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Attachment Manager- then set Inclusion list for low file types to Enabled for .mp3.

However, what I really want to know is, what makes these mp3's different to normal ones ? Is the warning permanently attached to the files somehow, and/or how does the OS know about them?

See if the file is marked as coming from another computer, files downloaded from the internet often are - and if it's a zip file that's blocked, so will be the files you extract from it. If so, (and you trust them) you can unblock them. See...

That looks like what I've done. But I'd like to know how they're like this. What makes 'this' mp3 different to 'that' mp3. Is it the OS or something in the file?

It's called an 'alternate data stream', it's part of the file's attributes. See this blog for a description....

...and this Sysinternals utility for an easy way to read them.

Thanks Bree. That's exactly what I needed to know :) I have PowerShell and should be able to see the ADS Zone Identifier. About to try.
