How Can A Notebook Be On The Lan But Not Seen By Router or Ping?

My son's school laptop works fine at home so it's on the lan alright, using the router.

But the router doesn't list it.

And I can't ping it.

And it doesn't ping my machine at home

ipconfig on his machine says 192.168.0.200

which is our lan subnet alright.



when he pings the router he gets 'request timed out' and then he gets three normal replies with TTL 45 or something.

I don't understand any of that. Can anyone explain what's happening to me? Is it normal? Has the school 'fixed ' his machine somehow?

192.168.0.200 isnt the standard ip range for most router and would be on another subnet are your other pcs on 192.168.1.200 range

You mean are they on x.x.0.200 ?
Yes, they are. My other boy's is 192.168.0.236.

The school has locked it down. Most likely he is using a VPN when he connects to the network, so that the school can track what is going on on their devices. Yes it is normal for these devices to be locked down, since it is their device, not yours.

That's interesting. How does that work? So his vpn software gets out to the web via my router - that's a must, right? Well right there it has to get an IP from my router doesn't it? And that's the 192.168.0.200 isn't it?

Or if he got out without getting an IP from the router how's that work?

We're actually just trying to get minecraft up for his brother and he and it's turning out to be a hassle...

If you do an ipconfig /all from the cmd prompt and post results we can see

sorry about that.. he's just gone off to school with his machine.... what particular bit of the readout were you interested in? we did a few and perhaps I can remember... or do it again and take note this evening...

The question here is how can his notebook not appear on the Telstra router we have ?

If you post results from ipconfig /all we may be able to tell you it could have a fixed up which happens to be in the right range
