High ping spike (2500+) every 10 seconds

Since one of the last WIndows updates, every 10 seconds my ping will jump from ~20 to over 2500. It is very consistent. I feel like I've tried every suggested solution the internet has to offer, from resetting my router, to a full Windows 10 reinstall/repair. The problem persists.

I am on wifi via a USB receiver in my desktop. I've been set up this way for over a year and haven't had any issues since the update on Nov 14th (roughly, give or take a day). Since then its been a problem 24/7.

Please help, I am at a loss.

Does this happen if you ping the router's IP address? Have you tried connecting via Ethernet instead of WiFi?

Yes, also then. I have not tried connect to Ethernet yet because I need to go buy a 50' cable then and run it all the way through my house, so I'm hoping I can get the wifi back running, with Ethernet being a last resort.

The wifi on my laptop (windows 8) works fine with no ping spikes.

Ping is never a good test and if you keep pinging its a DOS attack and lots of devices will act on it and drop packets. What does a tracert show as that often shows a faulty router along the route

So I picked up an Ethernet cable and that fixed the ping issue while plugged in. So that changes things. Might it be that my WiFi receiver/driver is no longer compatible with something in the new update? There are no driver updates available for the receiver, so if this is a possibility, the only way to know would be to buy a new receiver and try it out...

What WiFi adapter are you using? Do you see this issue with other traffic (e.g. downloading a large file)?

Is it always 10 seconds between the ping spikes? I wonder if there's some app running in the background that's messing with the adapter (for instance, scanning for other access points).
