    How To Get Smbv2

Just got my Nighthawk Gateway/router, hook up my HHD to router, when into windows 10 pro, and it wouldn't show up. I did everything, until one of the artilcles were talking about Smb v1 and I found it under Window Programs. They said check it, I did and now it shows up. The down side to this is that I've read alot of articles that said I shouldn't do this as it's bad. There's has been alot of talk about it and the botton line is this:
#1: How do I find out which verison my computer is running now?
#2: All the Window updates that I have received doesn't show that Smb v2 ...v3 has come in yet, so where do I get the newest verison of Smb?
    Thanks

The problem is that your Nighthawk Gateway router only supports SMB v.1. Windows 10 has SMB V.2 enabled by default. But what you are connecting to - the Nighthawk router - only supports SMB v.1. If you want to move up to V.2, then you need to replace the router.

Gosh, i hope I don't have to replace it. I can a power script and it was v1.5 on the readyshare. I contacted Netgear to see what they say. If they can't replace it, let me have a hacker come in and the lawyers can have fun. Security is tops in todays world. Anyway, is there an update for the router that has V2 or what's the newest version there is. As for my Windows 10 Pro computer, I didn't see anything else but Smb 1, and there is no Smb2. How can I tell if my computer has it?

There is a picture of what I took from my ready share..

Ummm.....right. You bought the router with SMB v.1. Netgear has absolutely no responsibility whatsoever to upgrade it to SMB v.2 or above.

How can we answer that when we don't know what router you have?

All OS's use SaMBa as the network sharing standard. That means that SMBv1/2/3 are available. You tell Windows to no longer allow SMbv1, it will use SMBv2 as the first and SMBv3 as the next for connections, depending on the SMB standard that the other device is capable of. Gateway's do not use SaMBa, unless they can allow a USB storage device to be connected. Then it is up to the manufacturer of that Gateway to make sure that it is compliant to the current standards.

Sorry NavyCmd, didn't see your post. The type of router that I have is the C7800 Nighthawk. Where do I go to set SMB = True? Didn't have to set anything as I type in your "Get" command and found out it is set to True.

It does not look there is custom firmware available for the C7800. You are not going to get SMB2 on it. You will have to either get another router or get a storage link device that bridges the drive's USB connection to an ethernet port. The problem will be finding one of them that supports SMB2.

Or, a less portable option would be a NAS enclosure that the hard drive gets mounted in. I've got a Linksys DNS-325 and a startech.com NAS - neither of the support SMB2, though, I'm running SMBv1.

So far there isn't any firmware updates for the router. I believe this router just came out and when you pay $299 for something it should work perfect, well if this was a perfect world. I found another problem with the router as well. I downloaded several movies and music files to the router last night. At least 400 GB worth of stuff. Without anything on the readyshare, it was telling me that I had 938 GB free space. After the download it told me that I still had 938 GB free space.
Tomorrow I'm calling NG to get answers to all these problems. Hopefully, someone will give me some answers to these questions or the router is going back for a refund.

Hi, you could try to enable SMB1 client in windows 10, and it should work; worth trying before spending more money maybe...

@timlab55 knows he can enable SMBv1 in Windows 10. He doesn't want to due to the security risks associated with it.
