Yep , that should work eg from a USB drive , activation is not required till after installation , so should work fine.

That's the catch, like I said the network device that works in Windows 7 does not during the Windows 10 upgrade after the machine reboots into the installer from Windows 7, and the upgrade eventually fails from inability to download what it wants:

Haven't done it in a while but there was (?) an option NOT to download updates now and continue and then run the Windows update once you are installed and back online.

Unfortunately not, it seems, as of this version of the W10 upgrade tool . The only options presented are whether to create an ISO or run the upgrade, and what to keep in terms of installed applications and settings.

The initial download is rather quick, it only gets about 2gb worth of 'stuff', according to the contents of the folders it puts them in. It attempts to fetch the rest after the first reboot into the installer, which creates this conundrum.

That sounds like you are trying to upgrade directly from the Media Creation Tool App and have NOT made the USB Drive with the Media Creation Tool ? You can also make the ISO , then use Rufus to put it on a Bootable USB drive for you.

Have tried both.

I downloaded a full v2004 ISO which I have extracted on a partition, and have tried the upgrade from the Media Creation Tool.

Both have the exact same result, when launching the setup from within Windows 7 (which I understand to be required to get the free upgrade and avoid having to buy Windows 10), during the second phase after the first reboot, repeated failed network calls lead to an install failure and a reversion back to the Windows 7 install after about 30% of phase 2.

Have also tried launching the upgrade from the downloaded ISO with the network disconnected entirely, and it makes no difference, the installer still only starts with a bare minimum of copied files and fails when it can't download the rest.

My best guess is the \problem is originally what I posted about, that the previous version of the i218-v driver only supported up to the version prior to Windows 10 v2004.

My best guess is the \problem is originally what I posted about, that the previous version of the i218-v driver only supported up to the version prior to Windows 10 v2004.

I would try and find a 1909 ISO then and use it instead , then move to 2004 when able.... , only 1/2 my computers have been offered 2004 so far , so I am not rushing it personally.
