Unable to Cast to Device to my Smart TV

    Hello all,

I went to File Explorer and right click on a movie and select Cast to Device. My TV is shown in the next pop up screen but then it says 'Unexpected Device error'?

I can play the same movie using native app in TV, but not from Win10 to TV?

    WMP streaming is turned on.
I have run the troubleshooter for Devices and Hardware. It updated something but problem persists,

Can anybody assist with some troubleshooting please?

    WMP streaming is turned on....
WMP streaming is not required to be able to Cast. What WMP streaming provides is the ability to use the PC as a media server. Streaming is initiated by your TV. From your Smart TV's remote control you can browse for media servers and call for a video from WMP's library to play on the TV.

Casting is initiated from the PC and works with or without WMP streaming. Can you cast any other videos? If so, one possible reason for the error may be the particular encoding used in this video. Your TV may not have an appropriate codec.

Another possibility is that the TV has got itself into an 'odd' state. Test for this by turning it off then back on again using its power switch (not just the Standby button on the remote).

None of my movies will cast. Tried mp4, AVI & mkv.
Haven't tried turning off the TV yet.

Thought I would check below Network discovery services. All were running set to Automatic, however SSDP Discovery is running but startup = Manual? Is this correct? Could this be causing the error?

    • DNS Client
    • Function Discovery Provider Host
    • Function Discovery Resource Publication
    • SSDP Discovery

That's how mine are set too. I've just cast an AVI to my TV with them set like that.

    Thanks Bree.

The other similar thread to this says 'Cast to' used to work to a Samsung TV but now it doesn't. This would imply something is 'wrong' with our Win 10?

Can anyone suggest some more troubleshooting steps to try to determine what the issue is?

Not necessarily, it could imply there is something wrong with the Samsung TV. Smart TVs do get software updates too, it may be that a recent Samsung update has turned off DLNA on the TV. Is yours a Samsung too?

I know that on my Panasonic the defaults for DLNA remote control are 'Off' and that I had to turn it on in order to cast to it. A software update for your TV may have set it back to its default?
