    Media Server

    Hello!
I have a Sharp Smart Tv that I used to stream my photos, music and videos to.
However now when I try to access the "Media Server" from the tv, I get "No server Found".
I have checked the tv and no updates have been performed.
The pc which is running Win 10 Home, latest Build after the October update, had the Media Streaming turned off.
I have turned it on, I have set Media Player to "automatically allow devices to play my media".
But I get the same result, I have looked at using both Plex and Emby, but I don't need all the things they offer.
I just require what I had before.
Has anyone got any ideas how to get media server back?
    Cheers,

Plex out of the box offers nothing extra. Plex as a server is very robust for a Home Media Server. The NVIDIA Shield comes with the Plex Server built in and works very well as a Media Server.

I used to have my Windows 7 set up as a Media Server and streamed my videos to my Panasonic SmartTV by browsing using my TV remote and choosing media from the Media Server on the PC.

When that PC got the upgrade to Windows 10 in 2015 the Media Server method still worked, but I soon realised that by far the easiest way to play all my media on the TV, videos, photos or music, was to right-click on a file or folder and select 'Cast to Device' to send it to my TV. So I removed the Media Server and have never used it since.

Now you'll have to excuse me, but I'll be signing off for tonight - I have a new video I need to Cast to my TV....

    Thanks for the replies,
However it doesn't solve my problem, I've tried cast to tv and it works, but if a photo is in portrait mode it is rotated to landscape.
It seems to me everytime Microsoft provide an update I lose functionality. First it was Homegroup now it appears the Media Server, what next?

Has zero to do with updates Microsoft is making. It is the EXIF data that is embedded in the photo to tell the display device software how to display the photo. Home Group was removed because it really did not serve any functionality. If all that you are doing is sharing a drive and the TV is actually broadcasting media that it is able to see from network shares, Windows has zero to do with this complaint.

Thanks for the reply, but again it doesn't address the problem.
The problem is my Sharp Smart tv cannot see my pc. they are both connected via my Home Network. I can cast to my tv so the pc sees the tv. Nothing has been done to the tv since December last year. On the pc , media streaming is turned on and media player is set to automatically stream all media. What I need help with is "what do I set on my pc so that my tv sees it?".
Before April I used Homegroup and everything worked perfectly. My two laptops could see each other and my desktop, all three could access the printer wired to the desktop. I could stream media from all three to the tv, controlled from the tv. So to claim Homegroup had "no functionality" is not correct, it worked for me.

    Hi there

    @enfield250
Losing functionality is always a PITA

However - not the answer to your problem but I think it's a far better solution .
If you have something like an amazon fire TV stick / ROKU device install KODI / VLC on it and plug into one of HDMI ports on the TV.

Now on your computer enable the files you want to stream / view on the TV as shared. Ensure SMB1 is enabled in Windows (turn windows features on / off) as a lot of things like TV's etc still use SMB1 for network access.

My own view is that applications on smart TV's are usually too restrictive as they have their own proprietary OS. Very few (if any ) TV's are Android where it's easy to sideload (i.e load your own) applications.

KODI / VLC install perfectly on an amazon fire TV stick -- advantage also of KODI is that if you have ripped DVD's / BLU-Ray's to .iso files on HDD the TV stick via KODI will play those including menu's as well. VLC also works but KODI on the firestick seems to have slightly less problems with Network shares.

I know not the solution to your specific problem but it might be worth a look. Incidentally you can use either the fire sticks own handset or an android phone. For easy install of android apps on the firestick load aps2firetv on the phone and then install the application on the phone where with this app it will be installed on the firetv stick !! simple - easy.

Also another nice feature in using KODI is that it has an interface to grab subtitles from places like opensubtitles.org / subscene.com etc (configurable choice of provider(s)) so if watching TV / Movies and you want the subtitles you can get them automatically.

    Cheers

Can you see your Tv in this window and is it allowed to share? my Sansung Tv works fine with these settings.

Home Group has zero effect on your tv seeing the computer and vice versa. Microsoft thought that creating something called "Home Group" would make things easier, but it actually made things harder for sharing.

I would like to suggestion that you use Plex,
use this program and you will never have streaming issues again :)
Since you have a smart tv the plex app should be available to you in the app store on the tv.

Any questions regarding setup or anything else just ask :)
