Is it in the 'Show hidden icons' section? Click the ^ on the taskbar to find out. If so, you can just click and drag it to the taskbar.

What happens if you hide one of the other system icons when the taskbar is at the bottom of the screen?
(And the network icon is visible with the taskbar on the side of the screen).

Just wondering if you have some weird issue to do with display scaling/space/ somehow- can't imagine what.
    Lateral thinking..

And what happens if you create a new user for test purposes and log in as that user? Same thing?

    History:
my network status icon has disappeared when the taskbar is shown on the bottom.
    - what happened immediately before this?
    - did you install/uninstall a program?
    - receive an update? (Check Update History)
    - something else...

Do yo have a relevant system restore point? (Assuming restoring works...!)
