Cannot Access NAS-server after Win10 update

I recently bought a laptop, and now it cannot access my Synology DSM213 in File Explorer. The NAS showed up on the network on my laptop, but not in File Explorer, and when trying to open it, it would have me access it through a web browser. I want it treated like a drive/folder.

I can access the NAS just fine on my other Win10-pc's which I've blocked updates for a long time, but this laptop I bought came pre-installed with the 1709-version and I've read that SMB has been turned off since 1709 and is THE cause for other people's trouble not being able to access network drives.

I already tried re-enabling SMB in Windows Features, but the SMB is not even on the list! I have no way of enabling SMB.

I've read that Microsoft turned off SMB in all new versions of Win10, because it is "unsafe", but how am I then supposed to access my NAS-shared folder?

I cannot even access it by IP in File Explorer (ie. \\192.168.1.X etc.)

Then I tried un-installing the pre-installed McAfee-antivirus/firewall, to see if this fixed the issue. It didn't.
I removed it through Add/Remove programs the official way, and since then I cannot even enable Network Discovery. When I go to the network settings, enable Network Discovery and save the settings, it immediately rewinds to network file sharing being disabled.

How do I fix both issues?

While MS have turned off SMB1 by default you are still able to turn it back on in Windows Features. You only need the SMB 1.0/CIFS Client to be able to access legacy servers like your NAS.

It is exactly this option I am missing on the list. I do NOT have "SMB 1.0/CIFS Client" in the Turn Windows Features on/off.

Btw. I also need an answer on how to enable Network Discovery. Because it keeps turning itself back OFF. I am on private network and I have CHECKED that ALL services (DNS Client etc. etc.) are running.

Still, none of it works.

The Fall Creators Update (1709) certainly should have SMB1 available in its list of Windows Features, even a clean install of 1803 Home still has it. You didn't say the build number, but the latest build for 1709 is 16299.755 (if you've checked for updates yourself) or would be the 'Patch Tuesday' build 16299.726 if you let Windows Update do it automatically.

As your uninstall of McAfee did not work well, you may want to run the McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool (MCPR). Click on the 'use the Virtual Assistant' link here to get it.

Then, check your system for corruption and (if possible) repair it with the command sfc /scannow, if neccessary followed by Dism's restorehealth option.

If SFC could not fix something, then run the command again to see if it may be able to the next time. Sometimes it may take running the sfc /scannow command up to 3 times with Fast Startup turned off and restarting the computer after each time to completely fix everything that it's able to.
If not, then run the Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth command to repair any component store corruption, restart the PC afterwards, and try the sfc /scannow command again.

If you can't solve the problems with sfc/dism, then try an in-place repair upgrade.

If you want to stay on 1709, then you will need the 1709 ISO to perform the repair. Microsoft currently only offer the 1803 install media for download. You could use that, but it would upgrade you to 1803 at the same time as repairing your install.

If you don't already have the install media for 1709, then this 3rd-party tool can generate a link to download the 1709 ISO direct from Microsoft.

Did you run the removal tool supplied by Mcaffee?

That's all very well, but the problem is that many older NAS do not support anything higher than SMB1 and they are not the only such devices you may have on your network. I personally have two such legacy servers, one is my router that shares a usb HDD plugged into its usb port, the other is my SmartTV. If I want network access to either of those devices I have no option but to enable SMB1 in Windows Features.

The OP's system has a number of (related?) problems, one of which is that SMB1 does not appear in their list of Windows Features. I know from experience that a clean install of 1803 disables SMB1 by default but the option to turn it back on will still be there - for the OP it's missing.
