How do I connect to an SMB share on OSX machine from Windows 10?

    Hi,

I have a Windows 10 machine and an OSX machine on the same local network. Both have fixed IP4 addresses.

I started SMB on the OSX machine and can see my Temp folder on the Windows 10 machine.

On the Windows 10 machine, the OSX machine appears in Explorer (with a weird auto-generated name), but, when I click to open it, I get the Windows Security Enter network credentials dialog. The problem is that I can't find anything to enter into the username and password boxes that gets me in.

I've checked and rechecked all the usernames and passwords I am using but I cannot think of anything I have not tried already to get me in.

I realise this question is a bit general but can anyone please give me a clue what I might be missing?

    Kind wishes - Patrick

For Mac OS, you just open Finder and click on "Go", then enter smb://IP of sharing machine. See the following how to share between Mac OS and Windows. macOS Sierra: Set up a Mac to share files with Windows users

That works for sharing one or more folders. Thank you!

I'm still puzzled by the credentials prompt dialog that appears when I click the Mac in Explorer on the PC. What do I type in there? And if I got in, what exactly would I have got in to?

I don't have a Mac, but I get the same credentials prompt when connecting to some of my Windows PCs. What it is asking for is the name and password of an account that exists on the machine you are trying to connect to. What you see when connected is what that account has permission to see.

Thanks for the reply. I did think that was what was being asked but I've tried the username and password I use on the Mac and am denied access. Do I need to prefix the username with a domain or something?

As I said, I don't have a Mac, but apparently....

The only other thing you have to do is click on the Options button and you’ll see a section at the bottom called Windows File Sharing. In order to connect from a Windows machine, you have to check the box next to the user name and enter your password. For whatever reason, OS X has to store your Mac user account password in a less secure way in order to connect from a Windows machine. If you don’t do this step, you’ll be asked to enter the username and password from your Windows machine, but it will just give you an error even if you type it in correctly.

Did you follow the info in the link I posted? Sharing with a Mac is a lot easier than with Windows.

    Hi,

Sorry, yes, I did follow the link. I forgot that I baulked when I saw the warning about storing passwords in an insecure way.

So I have just tried it all now and unfortunately am still having problems. I've disabled firewalls on the Mac and PC. The Mac has a computer name set and file sharing is on using both SMB and AFP. When I click the machine in Windows, I just get a network error.

Interestingly, the Mac has the name 'UNKNOWN' in Explorer. This is indeed what is set as the NetBIOS name in WINS on the Mac, but I don't seem to be able to change it. I do remember that the name of the Mac showed up correctly in Explorer before I wiped the Mac's HD and installed Mojave.

I'd like to solve this but it's no big deal as I have trusty DropBox to fall back on. So please don't feel a need to use up any more of your time on this.

Passwords are very secure in Keychain. There is no insecure way when stored in Mac OS. Then your problem is with Windows not Mac OS. You do not need to set any NetBios or WINS in Mac OS. Again, follow the steps in the link I posted.

My problem is that I get to the step in your document that is entitled 'Connect to Mac from Windows' and my Mac has the name 'UNKNOWN'. So something somewhere is broken that is not covered by the article. I suspect I could dig through dialogs for weeks and not find it. I am no network expert (if you had not guessed already).

It is useful to know I don't need to worry about the storage of passwords in OSX though. So I have learnt something.
