Cannot Access Win 10 Laptop from Win 7 Desktop

Win 7 desktop is hardwired to Linksys ea8300 router and Win 10 laptop is connected via wifi. The Win 10 laptop can see the Win 7 desktop and its shares and connect to them. The win 7 desktop can see the win 10 tablet in the network but any attempt to access the laptop (dell-tablet) generates a permissions error (see below). This was working and I don't know what changed.

Win 10 tablet does not require any logon. Shares grant full permissions to everyone at the share and the security level. Win 7 desktop is a member of a homegroup and network discovery and file sharing are turned on for the home network. Of course, homegroup is no longer part of Win 10. Tablet is a private network and network discovery and file sharing is turned on for the private network. Both pcs are in a workgroup called Home. Function Discovery Provider Host & Function Discovery Resource Publication are both running on the win 10 tablet.

After getting the access problem, I cannot find any logged events on the tablet rejecting the access. I am at a loss especially since this was working.

Anyone have any ideas what is going on?

    Thanks, David

Welcome to the forum. From your error it looks as if your trying to access the PC it's self not a share you would normally access \\pc\share. Have you set NTFS permissions on the shared folder as after some updates it reverts back to default

Even though all permissions on the shared folders were set to Everyone with full control, I removed all my shares and created a new one. Permissions for the share are Everyone, full control. Security for the file is Everyone, full control. Advanced security permissions and share include Everyone, Full control. Still the same problem accessing from the Win 7 desktop. Doesn't matter whether accessing thru the network or directly through \\dell-tablet or \\dell-tablet\share-name

I don't think there is an issue with the way the shares are set up. It looks like the laptop is denying access to the desktop, but I can find no event dealing with the denial. I see audit successes for login and special login at that time, but there are lots of them, so don't know whether they correspond to the desktop attempt at access.

Samuria, as I noted above NTFS permissions are set to everyone, full control at the share and the security levels. Normally I would map a network drive on the desktop as a way to access the shared folder on the laptop. Mapping the shared folder to a network drive on the win 10 laptop does not accomplish anything. The win 7 desktop is unable to access anything on the win 10 laptop.

Are you giving username and password when you map? If you map \\dell-tablet \c$ try from cmdline replace user and password with admin username and password on the pc

    net use s: \\dell-tablet\c$ /user:user password

If that doesnt work windows doesnt like - rename pc to delltablet and try

    Hi there

on the win 10 computer is SMB1 enabled -- programs&features-->turn windows features on / off or similar.
sometimes this setting gets re-set. Win 7 can't handle newer SMB3 protocol.

Also IŽd get rid of "Home groups" just share everything in standard workgroup and it's usually easy.

from system in control panel / properties.

thanks Jimbo, smb1/cifs is enabled/checked on the win 10 machine. Also, I do not use usernames/passwords on either machine and never had a problem with this. As long as the network is secure I don't want to be bothered with having to login. I was wondering if win 10 might have changed for network access to not allow blank username?? The interesting thing is I can't find any kind of event not allowing access. I thought that might help me understand what is going on.

ok the plot thickens. I can connect to the w10 share from the w7 machine via net use s: \\dell-tablet\share-name without any username/pw. I still get the above permission error when trying to connect via the network folder. I would prefer to access via the network folder whenever I need.

Windows since win7 doesnt like having no passwords its a security risk which lets hacker or malware full access to pcs
