netgear 2 ban adapter 5 GHz broken-2.4 Ghz is fine after 1809 update

I have a Dell XPS 8500 desktop that after the 1809 update my WNDA 4100-N 900 wifi adapter has become useless on the 5 GHx side. 2.4 is still fine. Initially after the update the 5 side would connect but would fade out. I had no problems before the update. As I said 2.4 works fine and is still working fine. I have reinstalled the Netgear drivers, I have a TPLink AC 1900 router that I reset to factory then re-put my settings into it. Didn't help.
I then did something I now consider to be really stupid, I reset the computer. Reinstalled my programs, but it did not fix the problem. I could connect using the 5 GHz but it was super slow, sometimes could not even connect. Using InSSider Home I notice that there were quite a few people on my channel 36, so I switched to 40. Now it would not even connect. The 5 GHz side works fine on my phone, but on the computer, no way. I have no other way to check it. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi tacua Welcome to the TenForums @tucua

For future reference please investigate and start using a tool like Macrium Reflect. System Images are quick and reliable method to reverse Feature Updates and the software is Free.

Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

If you use the media creation tool on Monday Oct 8th, 2018, evening it should give you 1803 as 1809 has been suspended.

When you reload driver from this page did you use the driver for 10 or 8?

I would uninstall the current driver and install Win 8.

If that works you will have to tell Windows to layoff driver updates. Option 4 this tutorial

Enable or Disable Driver Updates in Windows Update in Windows 10

I would be falling back yo 1803 and I would not rush to install any feature update. Let the noise settle.

    thanks Ken

I had tried your suggestion of using the 8 driver by netgear, did not work at all.
I think that it was a coincidence that the adapter started failing at the exact time of the update. I am getting a new one through Amazon, should have an answer in a few days.
I use Aomei and didn't do a backup before, in the future I will.
I always have the auto driver update disabled, MS has a way of messing with some of my drivers if I allow them.
Thanks again Ken for you suggestions. I will post here if a new adapter helps.

It's patch Tuesday, who knows what Redmond will publish as a "Fix"

I really don't like coincidences. Fingers crossed.

Ken, The reason I think is probably a coincidence is that after the update the 5GHz worked, but it started to fade as I would use it. The 2.4 GHz side still works fine, but I can not even connect to my 5 side now. I checked the router's 5 GHz with my wife's phone and it works fine (I don't even have a phone at this time, I'm a dinosaur with a land line). Unfortunately I don't have another 5 GHz adapter to check with. The one I ordered from Amazon is a definite upgrade from my old one.
Thanks Ken for the finger crossing, I have mine crossed too and thanks for the input!

Ken, I got my new adapter, and it did turn out to be a coincidence. The new adapter works great. Just very strange that the day of the update it started to misbehave. Thanks, Ken for all your input, it's much appreciated.

    Thought maybe, naybe not

I thought it was sorted, not sure if it is the adapter is the problem. Definitely do not think it was Windows fault, but after more and more testing it seems that it is my TPLink router that is the problem. Reading the reviews of my router in Amazon it doesn't seem to be far fetched at all for it to be starting to misbehave. Also reading the reviews of TPLinks, seems its customer relations are not the most responsive. I'm doing further testing, we'll see what happens. It has been a very frustrating trial.

Not sure how old router is but they do fail.

To get the range the power is turned up and they can run hot.

My Netgear R6300 failed on the 2.4 band. Kept reloading it, great speed, then nothing, then worked, then nothing.

I replace with another Netgear which runs exceptionally hot. I imagine its life will be short lived.

The router is not that old less than 8 months. It is a TPLink AC1900, Archer C9. It has a 24 month warranty, but their customer service in notoriously bad and hard to deal with, so I am waiting for the impending total failure of the 5GHz side before I deal with them. If they won't play ball I will probably get a Netgear or maybe an Asus router.
    Thanks Ken for your input.
