Well this certainly has got your attention.

I wonder ..... is this just the card. Is it time to buy to buy another from a named brand.

We could see if this is a Windows implementation. Have you tried booting from a Ubuntu disk, don't install, just use their "Try" option. Comes with Firefox, run speedtest. (If you done this already, give me what for. LOL )

Can you set 2 gig to AC they should be compatible in theory but there is such a big difference in speed often packets have to be resent as one is so fast

Yeah, I am definitely focused 100% on this issue with my desktop right now, and I can't seem to shake it. For so long I just dealt with not being able to use the desktop, which looking back was absolutely ridiculous of me to do. I've also thought about a new card... was actually looking at some earlier today, Newegg is having a big sale so I might be able to pick one up for a discount. Do you have any recommendations? I obviously can't pick out a good one lol. I have not tried using a different OS. I did try booting into safe mode with networking at one point, but WiFi isn't available in safe boot on the Home version of Windows 10 (pretty stupid if you ask me).

As for the the tests I mentioned in my last post: I ran multiple speeds tests on the laptop again with network discovery and file sharing on and off (It was already on so I tried some tests with it off as well). Same slow speeds only on the 2.4GHz network. Turned to the desktop and ran some speed tests (with network discovery and file sharing on and off)... Speeds are back to the previous slowness that initiated this thread in the first place *sigh*.

Not trying to blame you for sending me the Aukey driver to download, but it seems to have caused more harm than good. Connection speed has dropped down to 120mbps and signal strength to 61%. Tried uninstalling the device and reinstalling the drivers, no improvement (in a previous post I mentioned the link speed jumped to 300mbps and signal strength improved when I installed the driver from the Realtek website). Anyways, my brain hurts...

Use DriverStore to remove the driver. Use the trouble shooter to reset the adapter and your Realtec driver should load back in.

I'd try Ubuntu. Straight forward enough.

I like name brand products TP, Realtec, Netgear. Ideally a company know for networks.

There's no option in my router's webUI to set the 2.4GHz band to ac, so I'm assuming I can't. Drop-down list shows only Wireless-G and -N.

I've already done that twice, showing 180mbps link speed and 64% signal strength. I'll try Ubuntu and give you an update.

Edit: I got the driver situation fixed. I'm not sure what I was doing wrong the first time around but now I'm on the 2015 driver getting 85% signal strength and 300mbps link speed. Before, I was installing the 2017 driver and it was giving me ~60% signal strength and 120-180mbps link speed. Weird.

I'm on Ubuntu right now, ran two speed tests and I'm still getting the slow internet speeds. That leaves me with two possible causes to this problem:
    The NIC is bad
    or
Motherboard firmware isn't up to date or there is some setting in my BIOS causing issues (I've checked a million times but I'll check again).

I do have to say one thing: Ubuntu has come a long way in the last few years. I remember about 3 years ago I set up a bootable flash drive with Ubuntu just for fun and the OS was very difficult to use. I like what they've done now.

Glad you like Ubuntu. That settles it is not a Windows issue. At least one thing scratched off suspect list.

I would be inclined to point finger at wireless card. You obviously know what you are ding with the BIOS and if there was an issue with the expansion slots I'm sure their forums would be loaded with complaints.

It, the new card, looks good. Has a two-year warranty and Newegg general stand behind their products.

Interesting all the cooling, they must have power jacked up and need it cooled.

TP makes a ton of gear, always running into it.

Maybe do a quick search on Internet to see if any themes stand out.

    Good luck. Please post news.

I decided to go with a different one, made by ASUS (yeah I know they aren't known for their networking gear but I don't have a ton of money to spend and this seems like the best option). I didn't go with the one I linked before because the latest driver for it is from 2015. The one I actually ordered has drivers from 2016 (more of a peace of mind thing).
Anyways, here's a link it it:
    PCE-AC51 | Networking | ASUS USA

(I ordered it from Newegg so I have the warranty, just linked the ASUS page because it has more information)
It doesn't look as cool without a heatsink, but I think I'll manage lol.

As for the BIOS: I checked again and I had the latest firmware available, but I went ahead and flashed it again just to make sure there wasn't anything weird going on, no luck.

I really hope it's just a bad wireless card. That would make so much sense, but what doesn't make sense is how I was able to get 20mbps download, but only once... I don't know. If I get the new card in and the issue persists, I'll be convinced my motherboard is faulty. May flash a previous BIOS firmware to see what that does.
