    I had changed both routers' workgroup to MONKEYHOUSE after my last reply. At this point, I forced my main router to be the master browser. (USB Application > Media Services and Servers > Network Place (Samba) Share / Cloud Disk tab > Force as Master Browser) I already had the Samba share active, although nothing was being shared and no USB disk connected.

    What should I do next to get the NAS to appear in Network?
    OK, so everything is now on the MONKEYHOUSE workgroup and the nbtstat -a DLINK-019B49 reflects this ???

    If the above is true, then lets try the following ...

    A. Shut down your NAS

    B. On the CHARLES-DELL PC

    1. Open regedit and navigate to the following key ...
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters
    2. Right Click on MaintainServerList > Modify > Change it to No
    3. Close regedit
    4. Open Control Panel > Programs & Features > Turn Windows Features On/Off
    5. Scroll down to SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing and Support
    6. Uncheck SMB 1.0/CIFS Automatic Removal
    7. Uncheck SMB 1.0/CIFS Server
    8. Leave SMB 1.0/CIFS Client Checked (I think the Client is all you need)
    9. Reboot PC (it should force you to reboot, but if not then reboot anyway)
    10. Once PC is back up, then start your NAS

    Note:
    1. You do NOT want your PC to be the Master Browser, that's why we set MaintainServerList : No
    2. You can always reinstall the SMB 1.0/CIFS Server if needed
    3. You do NOT need/want the SMB 1.0/CIFS Automatic Removal

    Hmmm ... Everything on the Windows side looks ok to me. The only other thing I can think of is the samba config file (smb.conf) on the NAS, but I don't know where to tell you to look for it. If you can find/post the smb.conf, then maybe I can help you with it.

    Note: If you do decide to try and edit the smb.conf, make sure the current working one is backed up !!!

    Hey Blaq,
    1. Your NAS is still showing it's on the wrong workgroup and it should be on the MONKEYHOUSE. Assuming your looking at the right smb.conf .. there might be more than one. If you edit/save the smb.conf, you'll have to restart NAS for the change to show up and hopefully stick.

    From your smb.conf
    Current:
    workgroup = workgroup
    New:
    workgroup = MONKEYHOUSE

    2. I would still change MaintainServerList to No (Auto ... won't stop your NAS from showing on network)

    3. I would set browser service to auto (Open Command Prompt as Admin > sc config browser start= auto

    Note: I've seen you mention this a couple times now .... "I had changed both routers' workgroup to MONKEYHOUSE after my last reply. " .... Do you have 2 routers ???

    Hey Eagle,

    Sorry about the workgroup thing; I had to redo my NAS settings after a factory reset a couple of weeks ago and it kept slipping my mind. I followed your steps and DLINK-019B49 now appears in Network without any manual intervention on my part.

    Thanks for your help!

    P.S. I do have two routers; the second is in Repeater mode and unrelated to the current issue, but I set it to the correct workgroup anyway in case I need it in the future. (e.g. connect a USB drive to it or something)

    Hi folks

    @Blaq
    This seems to usually work (for the NAS)

    In your SMB.CONF [global section]

    insert this line

    #======================= Global Settings =====================================

    [global]
    max protocol = NT1 <===== THIS LINE

    ; max protocol = SMB3
    # can set it to SMB2 if you want experimental SMB2 support.
    #
    workgroup = WORKGROUP
    server string = Samba Server Version %v

    ; max protocol = SMB2
    netbios name = hestur
    log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
    max log size = 50
    security = user
    …….

    This seems to do the trick even with latest version of Samba.

    After updating the samba.conf file (it's usually in /etc/samba directory) STOP and RESTART samba.

    as root or sudo

    service smb stop
    service nmb stop

    wait 30 secs then type
    service nmb start
    service smb start

    (some Linux type distros have smbd and nmbd for the samba service - use whatever one is on your system -- but stop and start the services - don't rely on a simple restart).

    I thought the NT1 protocol was changed a while ago - but this still seems to fix the problem. You've set the Windows side to smb1 so that should be fine.

    You don't have to mess around with your other settings - I use NetBIOS name but that shouldn't make a difference.

    Check also by running TESTPARM - that will ensure you haven't made any typo's etc in the samba.conf file.

    Then on your NAS you should see something like this

    Can't see NAS (SMBv1), even via IP address (tried common solutions)-snapshot2.png

    cheers

    Hi Jimbo,

    limiting the NAS to SMBv1 sounds like a good idea. Unfortunately, I have lost the root user password for my DNS-325. I can't find any solution online. I'm backed into a corner.

    Hi Blaq, Can you do
    Code:
    sudo su
    on the NAS to gain root access? If yes, then immediately type
    Code:
    passwd root
    and enter your new password.
