    Hey loninappleton,
If you're referring the PowserShell script I posted, that is intended to be run on a Win10 PC. It may work on Win7 PC, but I have not tested it on a Win7 PC. It's purpose is to provide information only and it makes NO changes to your PC ... therefore it can't/won't fix anything.

Ok, thanks for that. I'm still holding that HD out for the experiment. This is my hobby and I take my time.
Today I'm running backups so I have some HD where the NetBIOS is not turned off.

If, as I mentioned above, the HD itself is failing, well that will close this .

It takes me a while to make a paper copy to follow as I do the instruction for Powershell. I'm curious to see how it works though I am no programmer or even a coder, nor do I touch type.

In the area of permissions. That was part of the error message but I am the only user and
administrator etc. I don't know how that issues an error either. There are no suggested fixes that I have
seen. There must be a switch down in Win7 that can activate or enable NetBIOS to TCP IP but the
windows to fix your adapter had no solutions.

There are two types of permissions ... Share and NTFS permissions ... You need to make sure the appropriate Users are listed in both places. You may need to add Everyone to both, but this depends on what folders your sharing ???

Share and NTFS permissions ... Right Click on the share folder > Properties
Share Permissions - Sharing Tab > Advanced Sharing > Permissions
    NTFS Permissions - Security Tab

Note: IF your sharing the whole C drive, then it's not a good idea to give Everyone r/w access to it .. IMO ...

There are only 2 places that I know of .. that's in the Adapter Properties and the registry (the adapter properties should reflect what the registry shows, but it may not). As previous mentioned, if it shows enabled in the Adapter Properties, but ipconfig shows it disabled, you have another issue with the OS itself, that is probably not going to be easily fixed.

Note: The above assumes you're not still using Blackbirds Privacy Suite ???

I'll just add one thing to say that when installing Win7 or Win10, I depend on the public folders already
available to the workgroup. In other days I got into the share confusion not understanding the code for paths and such.
We can abandon the botched HD which might be preferable. It's my botch. Perhaps trying to get other eyes on it is a burden on the responders. I continue with these things thinking there are other users who may
    enclounter the same problems.

From here I'm going to look at the script offerend in Powershell.

Today I have marked the thread solved.

No long explanation except to say that in retracing my steps back to Blackbird Security Suite,
I thought I could run it in the same way and then back out of it with an uninstall.

But Blackbird makes a Recovery file which I failed to remember. Running Blackbird and
selecting it's Recovery operation, then selecting Windows Default settings turned NetBIOS to TCP/IP back on.

    Thanks to all who helped.

I still think BlackBird is a good tool. But as I recall it is written for
Windows 10 but says it can work on Windows 7. That's when I tried the program on a Wondows 7
workgroup I have. There may be a direct command in Blackbird's 43 switches that addresses this. If so
I can use Blackbird and manually switch back NetBIOS enabled.
