New home network wish to change access from everyone to individual

Hi all I've setup a home network with my Desktop PC (It did have a redundant network with old laptop a couple of years back) and new laptop both Win 10. it all works ok but I would like to change share permissions from Everyone to just the other (one) computer. I have tried to find each computer but I am not able to. I have tried to under "Network Access" add the name also I have tried ip address from ipv4 but no good but I might not have the syntax correct. I tried \\ip address\ and \\ip address\computer name\ Maybe I need to put in a user name and password but I have under Sharing options/All Networks selected "Turn off password protected sharing"

With password protected sharing turned off you can set permissions on each share itself. Right-click on a folder you are sharing, select Properties and look on the Sharing tab. Click on the Share button and you can change the sharing permissions. You grant access to accounts or groups on the PC doing the sharing. If you are signed in on the PC trying to connect to the share with an account of the same name and password you will see the share as soon as you try to connect. If not, you will be asked for the name and password of an account on the PC that has permission to see that share.

Access is further controlled by the ntfs permissions on the folder and files being shared. On the Security tab you may also need to give ntfs file permissions to the account(s) you have chosen to give Share permission to.

Here I have a C:\Temp folder that is currently shared with Everyone and an account named 'Owner'. Like you, I also have password protected sharing turned off.

Hi Bree Thank you for your response to my problem. When you say "If you are signed in on the PC trying to connect to the share with an account of the same name and password" Are you saying that if I setup my computer to signing in with a password when I first turn on my computer and under Sharing Options/All Networks change my settings to "Turn on Password Protected Sharing" that I will be able to find my other computer and be able to add it in "Network access"? Because that is my problem I can find the computer when I set it to everyone but not when I try to Add one person (the other computer) or is there a password somewhere that is specific to networking?

I have password protected sharing turned off on all my PCs. Shares are then protected by the share permissions and the ntfs file permissions. I have a C:\Temp folder on each PC which is shared with Everyone having full control, the ntfs file permissions are also set for full control for Everyone.When you try to access a share on another PC the access you get depends on whether or not the name you are signed into this PC also exists on the PC you are trying to connect to and whether the passwords of the two accounts are the same.

The result is that If I have the same user account name and password on each PC I can access the Temp share on any PC from any other without being challenged. When connecting to a share on another PC it will first try to connect as the user/password I've used to sign into this PC. Only if the user and/or password is different on the PC I'm connecting to will I be asked to give a name and password that exists on the PC I want to connect to.

Hi Bree thank you for your helpful advice. I didn't realise there were two types of permissions. I set up one computer with a password and tested out what you said and yes I had to put in a password when I accessed it from the other computer then I put the same username and password into the other computer and could get straight into the shared files it was brilliant thanks again for your advice I would still be struggling without it.
