    something using my bandwidth

I am using Virgin Mobile for wireless internet and a HP laptop. I am on a capped plan and know how to disable windows updates and I do that. I get them when I go to the library and us their wifi. But something is still often using my precious bandwith and I can't seem to find out what and how to safely stop it. Please advise cause I'm losing more as I write.

Hi, Open resource Monitor thus - hopefully you will see the process using the internet.

    This should be off

    - and check Settings for Background use by apps - app data and program updates.

Defender updates routinely- about every 4 hours on a schedule. You may have other programs which update on a schedule.

Could be One Drive and/or synchronization with other devices.

Have a look in Settings > Network & Internet > Data usage > "View Usage by app" although if it says "System" it isn't much help. You should be able to pick Virgin mobile (or cellular) from the dropdown list.

You can also go to Settings > Network & Internet > Cellular and make sure "Use cellular instead of Wi-Fi" is set to "Never.

And also, from there "Choose apps that can use your cellular data"

Check for malware running in the background as well.
You are using 63% CPU and 0 WiFi bandwidth, yet your connections are showing up as being used.
An MBR infection can mask the and change the reports you view in windows.
This behavior is suspicious to me.

Doesn't hurt to ask for a checkup every year, it costs nothing.

No thanks - normal idle CPU use under 3%, RAM 29%, others 0.
