According to the user manual, the airplane key turns the airplane mode and wireless feature on and off and that the key is also referred to as the wireless button.

I've disabled the built-in adapters, and sound, in the BIOS in the past when wanting or needing to use an add-in card or a USB dongle. But haven't needed to try it in the BIOS of the last couple or three model years. If disabled in the BIOS Windows shouldn't still be picking it up as available, the OS reads the BIOS during startup to see what devices it has to work with.

I just tried it on my laptop and I can't get it to work either. However, when I disable the built-in wireless device in the BIOS setup, as mentioned by another poster, it works fine. Restart the computer and when the HP logo appears, press "Esc", then "F10". I have to click on "System configuration", then "Built-in device options" then "Embedded WLAN device", then "Disable". You must save the changes when exiting the BIOS setup. I click on a big red "X" in the lower left corner, then "Yes" to save the changes, but your computer may be different, Also, be prepared to reconfigure your Wifi. Press the Windows and "i" keys simultaneously, select "Network and Internet", "Wi-Fi", then "Show network devices" under the new Wi-Fi entry(WIFI-2 in my case). Find your network, check the box marked "Connect Automatically", then click the "Connect" button. You may have to enter your network password.

On many computers, BIOS setup can be tricky to understand and use. Don't select anything like "Reset" or "Restore", but don't be afraid to select or click on other things, nothing is altered until you actually save the change. There must be a section where you can reconfigure the hardware in the laptop.
