Windows 10 Pro unable to connect to samba share but works in safe mode

I've been having issues with my laptop, a dell latitude 8850 not being able to connect to any network shares.
Don't think it ever worked since I've had it.

The machine in question is a windows 10 pro and is fully up to date

Tried with shares that were created on:
    - synology nas
    - freenas
    - a different win 10 pro
    - a windows 7 machine
    - localhost

It does work when I locally share something and go to localhost.
What also works is booting the machine in safe mode with networking, once I do that all shares are accessible.

There was an anti virus installed, I've removed it to be sure that is not the problem. Also disabled the windows firewall just to make sure there are no firewall rules I'm not aware of.

As it works in safe mode, I checked the services and drivers but don't see anything out of the ordinary.
This is a development machine so I do have things like Virtualbox, Visual Studio and openvpn installed.

It is a laptop from work, so it's logging in with a microsoft account, don't think that matters as things work in safe mode using the same account.

There are quite a few services that are running, here is the list:

Does anyone have any idea what I can try next?
A win 10 pro VM works fine, so it must be something that's installed/running but no idea where to look next.

    Hi,

You may go to Control Panel/Programs and Features-->Turn Windows features on and off and see if SMB 1.0/CIFS is checked. It's unchecked by default.

I've already tried that, wasn't needed for any other Win10 Pro install and on the machine itself it also works when booting in safe mode. SMB1 is also disabled on some of my shares, only those I made for testing might have it turned on.

I'll try to remove some software that interacts with network things like virtualbox and openvpn, do need those for work but those are easy to reinstall.

So removing openvpn did help, now it's prompting me to enter the password.

But here I have the issue that it's not authenticating, might be due to the fact that this machine uses a MS account?, although my own win10 installations and the win10 pro VM i'm now testing with this doesn't seem to be an issue.

I select other account and enter the username/password and it says it's incorrect, while this works fine on the VM I have.

It's also not the credential manager, I've cleared any saved credentials to all the servers I've been trying.
Again this works fine on all other machines.

    * Edit *
It's one of the services, I've unchecked all none MS services and now it works, will take me some time to narrow it down and hopefully it's nothing important

I always have problems with this and so I try userName@serverName or \\serverName\userName or (if using a Microsoft account) userName@outlook.com until it works.

I'm not really sure the correct syntax so I try them at random. May be worth a try - I guess the server name needs specifying somehow.

You could also try net use from a non administrator command prompt as described here : Map Network Drive - Windows 7 Help Forums

You are correct it's the way the credentials are entered, removed them again from the credential manager and entered the user as .\admin, now it saved it correctly and can log in.

Someone just posted the same issue as I was having here

I've reinstalled openvpn and for now everything keeps working at home, will try at work tomorrow but so far everything looks good.

No idea what the actual problem was though, I did remove openvpn and dissabled all the none windows services in msconfig. Then got it working, re-enabled everything and installed openvpn again and still good so far.
I think it did have to do with openvpn though, because once I removed that I was suddenly able to get the logon box, and in safe mode nothing of the openvpn drivers and services was getting loaded so could explain it.

    Well, that is good

I don't use openvpn but you might want to check this HOWTO from the SuperUser link above if it breaks it again. It does say "If you are ethernet bridging (dev tap), you probably don't need to follow these instructions, as OpenVPN clients should see server-side machines in their network neighborhood". I love the "probably" in their documentation...
