    2.4GHz vs 5GHz connection

I'm sorry for the very basic question. My router has both 2.4GHz and 5GHz capability. But my laptop only seems to see the 2.4 to connect. Maybe my wireless adapter is too old to use 5GHz or maybe I have it set wrong. How do I find out and enable 5GHz? And while I'm asking, do I need to have Hotspot enabled? I don't used Hotspot. Thank you.

The chipset you have there is 2.4 GHz only and that is it.
To make use of 5 GHz would mean adding a USB wireless dongle with appropriate ac capability(5 GHz).

But you're not really going to notice much difference, not unless your broadband is faster than the (typical) 150Mbps that even 2.4GHz can provide with 802.11n. Plus you benefit from the greater range of 2.4GHz over 5.0GHz.

Depends on the particular Network situation.
150 Mbps is relatively low compared to a wired 1 Gbps Network adapter for LAN, or an ac Wireless adapter.

The Internet connection is a different scenario. All that is required there is maybe 2x your max download speed.

Thank you all. That answers all my questions.
It's a pretty old laptop. I'll look more knowledgeably when I need a new laptop.
    Thanks guys.

    In general, this is true.

However, I lived in a flat surrounded by lots of 2.4 GHZ users and got some interference.

I used wifi channel analysers to determine the least used channel of 1,6 or 11 (moving target as many use auto) to minimise interference.

I then got a 5GHZ router and most users did not use it. No interference at all.

As time went on, more users obviously got 5GHZ as well but never experienced interference - I guess in part due to its channel management, and in part the lower transmission distance works in your favour (remote signals are harder to detect).

That is exactly why I asked the question. Bandwidth. I have about 15 devices connecting to my home wlan. Some, like security cameras and my wife's cellphone, can only use 2.4. But I thought if I could move my laptop to 5 I could reduce the congestion. Would a 5GHz dongle make a difference?
