User Problems when trying to share

I've followed your tutorial on sharing a folder C:\stuff in my \\comp1 and my laptop, \\comp2 can see the icons of the shared folder \\comp1\stuff under network/comp1

However when I try to look at the contents of \\comp1\stuff I am told I do not have the correct permissions

"Windows cannot access \\comp1\stuff...you do not have permission to access \\comp1\stuff

In both PCs I am an administrator,
in both PCs I am John Smith,
and in both PCs I have the same microsoft email id : john.smith@outlook.com

I am the same person. it asks for a name and a pw
I give it "john" or "john smith" or "comp1\john" or "\\comp1\John smith"
and the network pw but nothing happens

What's going on here? I was able to do it with XP.

Welcome to the forum. There are two parts to sharing first you create the share and give permission on the share often to everyone but then the NTFS permissions must also be set for the folder/files again everyone is normally set. Have you checked both share and NTFS permissions? If you try and share folders in the user profiles they give problems as even logged in on the PC you can't access them even as administrator

    More info

Something else : I have comp1 with Win10 in German and
the client : the laptop comp2 with Win 10 in English

Now you speak of sharing permissions and NTFS permissions. You didn't say WHERE I can set or see them.

I have found 3 (three) kinds of sharing specifications. Right-Click on the folder I want to share to my laptop, from \\comp1 to \\comp2 I find half-way down "Give Access To / in German Freigabe für" this is the first

down the context menu at the bottom is "Properties / in German Eigenschaften"
Here under the tab "Sharing/ in German Freigabe" where
I find the second "Share.../ in German Freigabe" and
the third "Advanced Share.../ in German Extra Freigabe"

Which one of these three is NTFS permissions?

    Found the solution -

A use all three of these methods to share a folder to "Everyone / in German jeder" -- defined above

B make sure that in Settings / network and internet / sharing options
or (Control Panel/Network and Internet/Network and sharing center/change advanced sharing settings)

    1. in (private, guest or public, all networks = three places) you set network discovery ON
    2. in (............................................................=three places) you turn ON file and print sharing
    3. in(all networks = the last of the three) you turn OFF password protected sharing

C In the second computer (laptop, comp2) the shared folder appears under Networks/comp1/stuff in file explorer on the left

the first time it will ask your name--use the name you use in the client computer (comp2)
and for password use the password of the homegroup network (which you may define yourself)

If your using home group it's been removed from Windows now so once you get the update you will have to revert back to work group

    >>If your (sic) using Home Group.....

I'm not using HomeGroup or HomeNet or HomeDome or anything.
The system never gives me a choice of which to use.
Since the server is in German I use Heimnetz. Or maybe it is SauerkrautNetz.
I don't know. It never offers an option, ever.
