computers with same name on LAN problem

    Hi there

If I have two computers on a LAN with the same name Windows can't see the rest of the network but only the individual computer you are logged on to.

All these machines connected via Ethernet cable (not wireless).

Windows 10 PRO x-64 latest standard build (not insider - not tested this "feature" on that yet).

Change the name then all computers are visible.

I'm sure this must be a defect -- there's no reason on a LAN with several computers people might have called their computers by the same name !!! (Note computer name not description).

    Cheers

Could it be just a protocol limitation? What happen if you have two internet sites whit the same name?

    Hi there

I don't think the case of duplicate Internet sets are possible with the same name as the domain part is mapped to a specific IP address whether IPV4/6 via DNS servers.

For instance while it might be true that nr of crazy boys in Iceland is a significant percentage of the population ( I probably count as 20 just myself !!) you could only have 1 domain of http://www.crazyboy.is for example. !!

If you could have duplicate Internet names - just think of the money you could make as posing as BBC - Home or similar !!

Computer names are something else although if something like NETBIOS gets a name and assigns it an IP address over your LAN I could see how problems could occur. I imagine though network addresses are assigned by the Router / Gateway so it wouldn't matter what the name is as the router would know by IP address what computer was making requests etc.

I must admit that I thought things like NETBIOS had long since "Bit the dust" though.

    Cheers
