How To Create Two Factor Authentication for Remote Desktop

Can someone please tell me how to create a Two Factor Authentication for my Remote Desktop. I am running Windows 10 Professional 64 bit. I recently was infected with a Ransomware virus and I am told that they probably came through my open Remote Desktop port that I use to remote into my machine when I am out of town.

Thanks very much for your help - Bill

Most people do not open port 3389 (RDP) to the whole world, They use a VPN.

Hello artmanphoto, are you using the built in remote software that comes with windows 10 ?
I too use remote software, so can i suggest you change to one of the following.
Because the remote software that comes with windows is very insecure.

    Anydesk
To use 2 step authenticator with anydesk go here

    Teamviewer
To use 2 step authenticator with teamviewer go here
    Youtube Video here

    Splashtop
To use 2 step authenticator with splashtop go here
    Youtube Video here

    Radmin
Does not have 2 step authentication as far as i know.
But it does have IP Filter, very high security.

All 4 have very high security,
Anydesk, Splashtop & teamviewer all have so you can add two factor authentication with google authenticator.
    Personally i prefer radmin :)

    * Had to add Anydesk to my suggestion because it's just to good to leave out *

xTL - thanks for your help. I clicked the link you gave to Radmin and the website opened in a foreign language - not English. Is there an "english" speaking website for Radmin?

You also asked are "you using the built in remote software that comes with windows 10?" I don't think I am - I didn't know Windows 10 came with remote software other than the Remote Desktop.

I have 2 Windows 10 and 1 Windows 7 PC that I remote into with my
MacBook Pro when I am out of town. I have Jump Desktop software installed on my MacBook that I use to remote login to the PC's. I recently had a ransomware virus and my anti-virus company they probably got into the machine through the Remote Desktop. I do not have email installed on the machine that was infected.

I am using TeamViewer free edition to remote into my daughter's PC if she has troubles. I didn't know I could set up 2 step authentication.

    xTL -

I will trying using Team Viewer for my 2 step authentication but I have a couple of questions so I understand what I need to do.

Currently I am using Windows Remote Desktop which is turned ON for my three Windows PC's. I also use a program Jump Desktop that is installed on my MacBook Pro to login to each PC.

When I use Team Viewer do I install that on each PC and my Mackbook Pro then use the Team Viewer 2 step authentication? Do I no longer use Windows RDP or the Jump Desktop software that is installed on MacBook Pro?

Thanks very much for you help - I really appreciate it! Bill

Hello Bill sorry for the late reply.

You said that you were recently infected with a ransomware virus & that it probably came through your open remote desktop, so yes it's a good idea to change remote software, & skip windows RDP & jump desktop

Change the software from Windows RDP & Jump Desktop to Teamviewer.
    Install teamviewer on all computers.
Set up unattended access on the computers you wish to connect to.
( You can do this in the installation process or when teamviewer is installed @ Settings > Security )

And make a teamviewer account ( if you haven't already done so )
This will make it so that you can connect to them through a list ( Once your signed in )
    which is very convenient.

Also don't forget to add the two step authentication.

Let me know how it went :)
