Two Win 10 machines - no connection

Had a new Win 10 machine, set it up solo, hardwired through a gigabit switch to my router. In the process, it found my wife's Win 7 laptop. Cool! I

A few weeks later, I got another Win 10 machine, also hardwired through the same switch, and set it up. In the process, it also saw the 1st machine and the laptop. BUT when I go to the first machine, it's not seeing the 2nd one.

I have tried using the sync feature. Both machines have the exact same acct. name, linked through my MS account. But nothing I do makes #1 see #2. Both machines have sharing turned on, and both machines show connected to "Network 2" .

What am I doing wrong? I just want to share files between two machines connected to the same network on the same router.

Hi Gary. Welcome to the TenForums @gpbarth

First make these changes to each Windows 10 machine

    Right click Start, click Run
    Type services.msc, enter
Scroll down and find these two entries
    Function Discovery Provider Host
    Function Discovery Resource Publication
Right click on each service above, click properties
Change Start Up type to Automatic (Delayed Start)
In the service Status box click start
    Click Apply
    Click OK

You should see your boxes under network on both machines. May have to close File Explorer and reopen.

Then right click network icon is Notification tray, then Open Network and Internet settings, then near the bottom of right window click on link "Network and sharing center", then in left hand column, "Change advance sharing settings". Then under Private check

and then under heading All Networks decide whether to use or not use Password sharing. I use Password

If you use password you will be challenged for id (in your case your MS account) and password when you try to access other machine.

On the machine you are trying to access please right click on target folder, click properties, click on Sharing tab, then Share and add Everyone. You can assign read access or read /write.

FYI... with V1803 Homegroups was discontinued. Are both your Windows 10 machines on V1803. (Windows key + R, type winver, enter)

Thanks, Ken. And yes, both machines are 1803. Everything is set this way, and I can now see both machines ON both machines. Now my problem is this: on my new machine, I get this message: Network error - Windows cannot access \\Garysgaming\c You do not have permissions to access \\Garysgaming\c. Contact your network administrator...blah...blah.

Now I have given every permission I can find on my other machine, so I have no idea HOW to fix this.

On my other machine, I get a different message: Windows cannot access \\DESKTOP-QATHBOL. Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. I clicked Diagnose, and it says it can't find the problem. However, when I click on the computer in Explorer and tell it to connect with Remote Desktop ,I get the message that says, Remote Desktop can't find the computer "DESKTOP-QATHBOL" Yhis might mean that "DESKTOP-QATHBOL"does not belong to the specified network. Verify the computer name and domain that you are trying to connect to.

When I try the Remote Connect on the other machine, it says, Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:1) Remote access to the server is not enabled, 2)The Remote computer is turned off, 3) Thev remote computer is not available on the network.

I'm getting frustrated here. Both computers are on my network, Network 2. All sharing is turned on. I own both machines through my Windows login. I can see both machines ON both machines. I can see all file structures on both machines from the new machine, but can't open the new machine from Explorer on the old machine. Why is this so difficult?

It appears that you've shared the whole c: drive and that is what you're trying to access \\Garysgaming\c .... If that's the case then you need to use \\Garysgaming\c$

Note: If the c in your UNC refers to some other shared folder, then you might want to check Control Panel > Credentials Manager > Windows Credentials and see if the credentials are correct (i.e. network path, username, password)

On my other machine, I get a different message: Windows cannot access \\DESKTOP-QATHBOL. Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. I clicked Diagnose, and it says it can't find the problem.

Thanks, Eagle51. I have changed the name of my QATH computer to GarysWork, and rebooted. I have disabled IPv6. My Windows credentials have the new name, login ID and password. As for the \\GARYSGAMING\c$, it won't let me assign the $. When I click on Share, it assigns the network path with no editing available.

So now I can see both machines on both machines, bit I get the message both ways that I do not have permissions, blah, blah...

    What now?

As for the \\GARYSGAMING\c$, it won't let me assign the $
If you're referring to Credentials for the Network Path, I use just the PCNAME ...

On GARYSWORK ... enter GARYSGAMING Credentials
    Internet or Network Path: GARYSGAMING
    Username: GarysGamingUsername
    Password: GarsyGamingPassword

On GARYSGAMING ... enter GARYSWORK Credentials
    Internet or Network Path: GARYSWORK
    Username: GarysWorkUsername
    Password: GarsyWorkPassword

Note: I used all caps in the example above for the PCNAME in Network Path, but I always use the exact PCNAME (matching the case) for the Network Path.

When I click on Share, it assigns the network path with no editing available.
Hmmmm ... not sure I'm following on this one, when I go to share a folder or drive, it defaults to whatever folder or drive I'm sharing, but I can give it any name I want. Maybe a screen shot would help.

For the folder you are trying to share right click, then properties, share tab, share and make sure "Everyone" is in group.

By default c$ is active but even on the pc with admin rights some folders will be blocked like other users profile, desktop. If it cant reconis the name use the IP

Here is what I have done (with no results: first, I changed both machines to static IP addresses, to make sure DHCP was not the culprit. I went back and edited the credentials as suggested. Then I went and double-checked the sharing, and made sure that Everyone was allowed full access. And I am still getting the error when I try to connect to the other machine (both ways, although the attachment shows one machine). See the attachment below.

I can ping both computers, and ipconfig shows all correct network information. Arghh!

    Hey gparth,
Have you checked the NTFS Permissions (Security Tab) and added the appropriate User?
