Looking to find a wireless card to utilise new internet speeds

    Hi everyone,

I am moving into a new apartment in the next few days and Fibre Optic internet is included. I have been using the on-board Ethernet port on my motherboard as my internet connection, and do not have any wireless capabilities - I also cannot get a Ethernet hookup in the place, unfortunately.

So, I am looking to buy a wireless card and install it - but I am unsure of what make or model to purchase. I was looking online and can only find AC1300 in a card format (from Canada Computers, everything else is a USB dongle).

I was hoping to get something that can handle at least 750 mbps - 1000 mbps would be nice, but one can only dream .

I rusty on my wireless networking, so I am at a loss when it comes to this stuff (being a software developer I really should know it)

    Here are my specs:

    Computer type:
    PC/Desktop

    System Manufacturer/Model Number:
    Custom Build

    OS:
    Windows 10 Pro

    CPU:
    Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU G3258 @ 3.20GHz (2 Cores)

    Motherboard:
    ASRock - H97M PRO4 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard

    Memory:
    16 GB

Getting even 750Mbps over WiFi takes some effort. SmallNetBuilder's top-ranked router for peak downlink throughput can handle about 940Mbps. However, this is measured inside a test chamber with 4x4 MIMO devices with all 8 antenna perfectly aligned a few feet from each other. For real-world performance you can cut that number in half and go down from there.

With an AC1300 card (and assuming your router is also 2x2 MIMO) you'll be lucky to hit around 400Mbps if you're in the same room as the router. Since you're talking about a desktop PC, at that point you might as well just buy a $5 Ethernet cable.

Standards vs theoretical and actual speeds:
How Fast Is a Wi-Fi Network?

Here's a Wi-Fi speed chart that compares the actual and theoretical speeds of most current Wi-Fi networks:
    Theoretical Actual
    802.11b 11 Mbps 5.5 Mbps
    802.11a 54 Mbps 20 Mbps
    802.11g 54 Mbps 20 Mbps
    802.11n 600 Mbps 100 Mbps
    802.11ac 1,300 Mbps 200 Mbps

Then there's this- if you can get something that implements it:
What is 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and how much faster than 802.11n is it? - ExtremeTech

It is not just about the Wireless Card it is about the Wireless Access Point in the Router as well.
Quite likely you will need to upgrade both system components.

In UK you can buy this PCIe Wireless Card, in theory 3 Gbps.

    Hi folks
On Wifi I'm getting around 113 MB/s (approx. 450 Mb/s) (on ac) I'm about 745 metres from Router.

This is real data transfer (copying from Remote to local computer set of ripped DVD iso's).

Wifi system is a Netgear Nighthawk

Not the cheapest but does the job brilliantly (has 3 Antennas).

    Cheers

I have a little different take on your post, If Fiber Optic cable it available, what are your options to connect to it? Do you have a direct Fiber Optic link to your apartment then you would by a Fiber Optic wireless router from that point?
You mention your looking for a wireless card? To me, that would mean that you have wireless access supplied by your building. If that is the case I would contact the IT person or company that controls that wireless Router as to which wireless NIC should work best for you.
This is different for most of us all have our own Routers and we over the years have either just used the built-in wi-fi in our notebooks or desktops or purchase a Wi-Fi NIC that we have learned over the years to work best for us. I personally have found Intel Wireless NIC's to be very efficient and work very well with my Asus U68 Router very well as they did with my DLink DIR 655 routers in the past. The Built-in Broadcom in my wife's HP all in one, works well. You can always google what is the best Wi-Fi Card you'll find a list of the current best of the best according to whoever did the testing

The Wireless AC1300 units have a overhead like every other network device. Smallnetbuilder.com has a lot of good info. Unless you are looking at pushing large data through the LAN, the WAN to LAN is always going to be a choke point.

The apartment just supplies wireless Access Points that you connect too? (You said no opportunity to use ethernet)

Is there a separate Access point in each apartment that is isolated on Lan?

Anyone tried out this card yet, it looks promising to me. https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-802-11AC...V08G16QGYVH81H

Looks like the OP isn't coming back, he may have found out by now that they probably have 1 Wi-Fi adapter per floor with about 20 apartments sharing it! Or Maybe in Canada, they don't do things like that?

Bell Canada is currently running fibre to every house and apartment in Toronto at the average cost of $4200 per unit. They are retro fitting old buildings and new. Massive spend. Fibre to the unit not fibre to the node.

They have to compete with Rogers who while not providing fibre offer all those services with 1Gbps.

Bell's fibre will carry phone, TV and Internet, the only way they could possible get their money back.

Maybe he is lucky and the management is actually paying for this service. NNNNNaaaaa
