    Can't access NAS without internet

My access to my Synology NAS is not working anymore since I have moved. At my new place, I don't have internet (yet) and it looks like that is tripping off Windows (maybe it increased security settings???). I have my folders mapped, I used to be able to access my NAS folders through Windows Explorer and if that wasn't working, \\ diskstation always worked. But now on my new location, as soon as I connect to the LAN, Windows seems to do a connection test as my browser opens and it tries to go to a Microsoft webpage, but soon enough I get forwarded to my router which is saying it is not connected to the internet. When I try to access my diskstation by \\ diskstation it times out after a minute or so.

I can, however, access the NAS through the web interface, but moving files that way is a pain.

It all works just fine on my Windows 7 machine though, so I am currently blaming windows 10 and not the router.

When I moved, nothing changed. I have the same router, same NAS, fixed IPs. The only difference is the router not receiving internet signal anymore.

How can I access my NAS folders through Windows Explorer again?

    My setup:

    • Windows 10 laptop
    • Windows 7 laptop
    • Synology DS116
    • Asus RT-AC66U router

    Hi MightyMauz

Could you please confirm that your Win 10 device has been assigned an IP address using IPCONFIG.

Assume your address will be something like 192.168.1.100 or 192.168.0.10 (Both of these are just examples, yours could be different.)

I can use both of my WD NAS drives that are plugged into the Router via Ethernet cable even though I may not have Internet Access. Now if I were to set up the Cloud feature on them which allows away-from-home access there would be a problem.

Just download and run Synology Assistant from Synology.com. You would know what the DHCP IP scheme is for your network. If you have not changed anything on the ASUS router if used before, it should still be showing the current IP for the NAS.

IP of the router is still the same (I always make the IP of my NAS fixed), because I can access it by typing it in the browser.

...also that must mean that my laptop has an IP too.

I use a Synology NAS box, and like you have experienced a loss of access via the Windows File Explorer, usually after one of those version updates to Windows 10.
Some things have been changed with some features concerning SMB.

I would check in Programs and Features at the SMB settings. Also the NAS box settings for the same.
You have to go via Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off > scroll down to "SMB 1.0/CIFS File sharing support"
On mine just the 2nd box is ticked.
I'm not sure mine are correct, certainly no expert, but it's an area to look at.

Also check out the same area on The NAS box via the Web interface.
Synology Control Panel > File services > Enable SMB service and check Advanced settings, on mine it is set to SMB1 to SMB3 range.
May need to restart both to get changes to take, no surprise there.

It does not matter if your laptop has a IP. If you did not set your NAS to a static IP, it can change anytime you set up your network with a new provider and even a new router. Depending on your IP scheme set in the router, there should have been no changes to the NAS, unless it's lease was reset.

Download the assistant and see if it shows, otherwise you are going to have to access through synology.me to change the IP on the NAS.

    For IP addresses:
Synology Control Panel > Info Centre > Network > IP address.

For the Router go to it's interface to see IP addresses of Devices.
Make sure they are what they should be, I don't use fixed addresses but it does not matter.

Ping the address see if you get a response.

    To change IP address:
Synology Control Panel > Network > Network Interface > LAN > Edit.

My laptop has an IP, my NAS ip is fixed, I can access my NAS through the web interface through the local address, what more can I say??
