    WHY no "homegroup" in Win 10 home 64??, the cynic asks..

    My homegroup (which included this machine and two running Win 7)
    was running fine, until the last update, which wiped the homegroup out.

    MS has a facile solution, to replace the homegoup funtionality,
    involving using their Outlook-based email system.
    (Why, I recall the simplicity of peer-to-peer,
    which was replace by homegroup, by crackee.)

    But why, I ask, would they do such a thing??

    And the answer arises easily in my curmudgeonly - inspired deductive reasoning.

    "Well, they want more data hosted on their servers
    so they can mine it for their own purposes,
    and control the "free" space allocation for future income streams,
    and otherwise seek their own $$ based,
    to hell with you, profit opportunities."

    Let me see:
    Would a good company like MicroSXXX actually disable a functioning utility
    just to establish a future potential benefit?
    Mmmmmm?? (scratch head??)

    If this is just negative speculation, predicated on obsolete recollections of past performance
    please enlighten me .
    Surely, its because of security reasons??
    or enhanced funtionality??
    or, (uh)...???

    Thank you.

    Well, the "Oulook"-based "fix" is what was offerred to me by MS when I was trying to repair it: (the homegroup)
    (I can copy and paste it: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4027674)

    I use the equally-distressed (for other reasons)AOL mail system for some communications,
    (Based on starting there in the early '90's, and habit...)
    and "Outlook" is now happy to front for AOL. and hoover up all the E mails..
    Amazing accomodation: or facile redirection?

    And, with the permission structures required for "file sharing" on the local network,
    seems to me that the establishment of a "homegroup" is pretty much as secure as was required for
    "workgroup" last time I had to set one up. (Windows server ?2003? if i recall.)

    So, I'm not convinced that there were "problems" with functioning homegroups:
    and, if "Outlook" is not involved in the MS preferred "fix", then why is it and "One Drive"
    conspicuously listed at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4027674
    "Share files in File Explorer".??

    =======================

    Now of course I could set up a "workgroup", except that
    "windows cannot set up a workgroup on this computer"

    ===================
    I would like to make clear that although I have "strong opinions",
    i am definitively at least 10 years "behind the curve", as regards
    knowing WTHell I'm talking about. (imho, things started going downhill after Win 3.1,
    and the GUI has evolved into a mess of snakes. There was a slight chance of saving the web
    when a unique identifier was on ech CPU, and broadcast with every communication:
    But that was shot down because of "privacy" (guffaw) considerations,
    and thus continual chaos reigns..)

    Yes, I'd like to know a "good reason" why MS perpetrated this HUGE
    "waste of time",
    other than the reasons I projected.

    If CPU Power User" mag. was still around,
    I'd ask "The Saint", a commentator who lampooned MicroSu.. unmercifully, and accurately.
    =====

    I generating this response, I'm educated to "try" some other things,
    as may be referenced in the below url's.

    Nothing is easier than sharing files between Windows 10 and earlier versions of Windows, especially with OneDrive.

    Quite a many users had issues with HomeGroup, not able to leave one and create a new one and so on. It is quite understandable that it was removed from Windows 10.

    It may have been "wrong"
    it may have ruffled someone's feathers,
    but it was not incomprehensible.

    And, the references provided, supported the assertions made.

    Nevertheless, I am not here to argue.

    It is what it is.

    WHY no "homegroup" in Win 10 home 64??, the cynic asks..-my-networked-computers.pngI don't get it, we have been using workgroup since what XP?? or windows 2000?? I can't remember not having it. it has and still does work quite well for Peer to Peer network. Homegroup, was pretty much useless to anyone used to working with networked compters?

    @Clintlgm

    Actually the protocols and coding conventions for Workgroup Networking go back quite a while - Anyone remember Windows 3.1.1 "Windows for Workgroups" - Saved a fortune in Novel Networking licencing when that dropped

    One of the other issues with Homegroup was the inherent issue that it did not work well when the first device was a Wireless device, Not good for today's Home where the group is often all Laptops and /or Tablets

    I will agree that the use of an online system to perform local networking tasks is not great for some markets where Net Data Charges and reliability are often prohibitive - Better to send data around an internal network at 1Gb/s for free than pay for 1Mb/s (twice -- up and down transmissions). In the "First World" major Cities there may be uncapped High Speed Cable ut even in the same countries small villages can struggle and Developing nations may not even have internet

    Yes I think it must have been Windows 2000 that I first had more that one computer to network with and an actual router to have a network.
