Network discovery - Windows computers missing

I know this question has been asked (and answered) many times but I'm still confused. I understand that some kind of discovery process that Windows used to local other Windows devices on a LAN depended on SMB 1 and that is disabled by default in Win10. And that is fine with me; I don't want SMB 1 around. But Windows still has at least two other discovery process that find devices on a LAN: WSD and SSDP. Windows seems to loose the SSDP data after awhile (or at least won't display it any more) but the discovery process processes exist. Do these processes not discover Windows on the LAN? I have no particular interest in file sharing but I would like to be able to see the active devices on my LAN.

I could be wrong, but I thought Windows 10 used to show other Windows devices in the Network part of File Explorer. Is there any way to get that to happen without turning SMB 1 back on?

By default it uses netbios the problem is the list is held by master browser so it asks it for the list after an update there is in effect a new network so the MB has to update it can take 30mins to do this and MB can change if its shut down some times running this tool on every pc kicks it into life NetBScanner - NetBIOS scanner it also tells you which pc is MB

    Hey pokeefe0001,
Yea, without SMBv1 windows use WSD for other PC's (maybe other stuff I'm not aware of) and SSDP for other devices (i.e. router,tv/dlna media servers, etc). I haven't noticed SSDP stuff disappearing, altho my TV does take some time to show up if I reboot router.

For other PC's on the LAN (WSD) ... If you haven't already ... check windows services for the two Function Discovery services and make sure they are running and their startup type is set to automatic delay.

Note: It can take a couple mins for the other PC's to show up.

BTW: My netgear ac 1750 router won't show under Network in the navigation panel, unless I enable SMBv1. However, since I use readyshare (DLNA) it does show in Network > Media Devices along with my TV (SSDP) ... Now whether this is a windows or netgear SMBv3 issue, your guess is as good as mine

Thanks. Turning on the Function Discovery services on the computers did the trick.

My router - an ASUS TR-AC87U - does not not show up and I don't have any services enabled on it so I don't know of a work-around.

I have 3 NAS devices - a WD MyCloud, a WD MyBookLive, and a Synology DS218 - discovered by SSDP. The two WD devices show as "Storage"; the Synology shows as "Other". I assume the devices respond to the discovery process differently.

Is there any place where these discovery processes are explained? I've found MS web pages describing how to use APIs to invoke them (or invoke some kind of discovery process) but nothing that really defines how the processes work.

Same here .... I haven't really found anywhere, that gives a simple explanation for them
