Anyone familiar with wifi direct before i lose my mind?

So i have an affinity for learning things the hard way.

I kept trying to enable projecting to this pc anywhere on secure networks and every time i did in the past, it seems to pick up my neighbors pc.

In the past I had a restore ready to rollback and get rid of it. (it appears in my right click cast to device context menu). This time I do not. If i toggle off wifi it disappears, along with the other 5 devices which actually ARE mine.

So my question is a 2 parter...

    1) how do I get rid of that abomination of a device showing in my context menu? I checked my router and its not showing up as a connected device so im at a loss.

    2) how does one allow devices they own/in their network to cast to their pc without picking up neighboring devices?

Man the range is impressive, ill give it that ><

You will always see neighboring radios. That is how WiFi works. There is no way to remove items from the context menu. It is no different than when you want to listen to one radio station, but you have others around that you can pick up and listen to if you wish.

So basically if you live in NYC in an apartment building you canít use WiFi direct? Absurd you canít limit it to your own network. Even more absurd the signal is enough to pick up my neighbors pc which has to be at least 75ft away thru brick and gypsum walls.

Ah well. Off goes the wifi direct.

Of course, your neighbour is probably more annoyed with seeing your five devices!

    Lol yea Iíd imagine so.

While Iím here - I have one final question since ďcastingĒ is relatively new to me.

If I have WiFi direct enabled, I see 7 total devices. If I disable it I still see two. My tv and my receiver.

The icons are different and of the 5 WiFi direct devices, those two are amongst them as doubles.

Iíve now ascertained Iím just going to disable WiFi direct but Iím curious what the other type of casting is? I know it works - matter a fact it works better than the WiFi direct ever did. I can send music to my receiver or video/pics/music to my tv.

Just trying to understand what avenue that is using so I can see if itís supported by other devices and have better control etc.

Miracast is supported by the tv I know that. Is that separate from WiFi direct/always enabled/local network only?

WiFi Direct means that you are creating a private network between two devices and that is all that it is. Chrome Cast is a form of Wifi Direct. Miracast is a form of Wifi Direct. If you do not want to use Wifi direct, you do not need to enable it.

Hmm so the fact a ďcast toĒ context menu exists at all is a form of WiFi direct no matter what your saying?

The fact I have multiples of the same item then indicates different forms of it?

Cause I can disable my WiFi connection entirely and the majority of the items disappear. With only Ethernet plugged in I can still see and cast to my tv and receiver though. Wired direct? lol

Thanks for helping me understand some of the mess :)
