once again can't see computers on network

this seems to happen over and over with new versions of windows
I am running windows version: Win32NT 10.0.17134.0 Microsoft Windows NT 10.0.17134.0
I have shared documents folder with defaults and I have created a special user with r/w access to documents
I have turned on network discovery and turned off password protected sharing, with the intent to get prompted for credentials when trying to access the shared documents folder on networks
I have 2 boxes on the lan, both can ping each other
I have set both boxes to same workgroup
under networks the other box does not even show!

    Hey bbxrider,
If you haven't already, check that the following windows services are set as follows ...

Function Discovery Provider Host | Running | Startup Automatic or Automatic Delayed
Function Discovery Resource Publication | Running | Startup Automatic or Automatic Delayed
SSDP Discovery | Running | Startup Manual
UPnP Device Host | Not Running | Startup Manual

both the function discovery services were running but manual so I set them to auto
making progress, perhaps my mistake for not doing enuf restarts after making some changes
both boxes running win10, just for reference a dell and an hp
the hp can see the dell and its shared folders and it prompts for credentials so working ok on that side
the dell cannot see anything on network not even itself under network, however this is weird, on the network panel on the right side of file explorer, it lists the hp, its computer name, as a media device, when I click that it starts windows media player and lists there are no items in my music library, which would be true I guess because I have never used the windows media player on the hp and imported any music into it.
seems so strange that the dell doesn't see itself but can be seen by other box on the network, with the credential prompt working just as I configured it.

And password sharing needs to be turned off which is explained in my article. if you want to use it ON, then when you enter user and password in credentials box connecting to another PC, you have to then go to that other PC and confirm to allow the connection. Then if you use Microsoft account to sign into PC, then you need to use email address or User and email password.

    You can also go to
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Credential Manager
on each PC and remove previous user and password you might have used in the past to connect to other PC's, especially if you use Microsoft account to sign into PC.

Trust me, I am a master at all of this. Look on my article. Photos with a real network setup. I work on 600 PC's a year and about 100+ networks.

Plus, do you use a WAN DHCP Dynamic IP addressing Network. I have a link on the link above for setting that up

thanks very much for the follow and the super and I mean super mega link for the network sharing setup[

from the previous post I had set bothFunction Discovery Provider HostFunction Discovery Resource Publicationto automatic, but found after the current reboot they were both set to manual and the resource publication was not runningis there some registry setting that will keep them being automatic? why/how does windows mess with services settings after they have been set by an admin???SSDP discovery is running but manual, I will set to auto andsee if that sticksSame thing for UPnP as SSDP I have experienced different sharing outcomes on successive rebootsfor the hp pc that can see and get credentialed to the dell pc,I specifically did not check the box to keep the connection, but it has kept the connection and the credentials don't showup in the dell pc credential manager?in the windows features on/off both the smb client and serverwere selected, it looks like your suggesting to turn off the server, so I'm trying that, much easier doing that than invokingdism /online via cmd prompt. will be reporting back

again working ok from one box to the other , but not vice versa, see below for what I get from the box where not working, I think I did every thing but set up the shortcuts in the comprehensive connect link. Are those really necessary due to the problems with the 1803 version?

Look at this link too and check or set your network up using WAN DHCP Dynamic IP for a trouble free Network.
