How to selectively share files via network on different PCs in v1803?

    Hi all,

After upgrading to 1803 on all my computers, I can't seem to figure out a way to share files selectively between the PCs. We were using HomeGroup to contain the files to specific PCs, thus, requiring a "password."

However, we haven't found a real solution to selectively share. All the solutions points to sharing the files to "Everyone" on the network. If I try that method, I can share files easily. However, for security reasons, I want to restrict access to certain PCs on my network and not just simply anyone that uses our LAN.

The way we're set up now is one PC is hosting the files and trying to share it with a few other multiple PCs. Is there a way we can "give access" to certain PCs on out network? We've tried every method but it seems to be not working.

    Hello Kabigon,

You could use the "Give access to" context menu or "Share with" in the ribbon to select who you want to share items with.

I tried that but the only people to share is myself. I can see the other computers via Network in File Explorer but whenever I try to type the other PCs' desktop name and/or user name, Windows will say "Windows was unable to find DESKTOP-name." Hope that makes sense.

In that case, double check to make sure that "File and Printer Sharing" and "Network Discovery" is still turned on for each PC.

Each computer already has those settings.

The issue is that I can see the computers in Network but not be able to find the names since "Give access to" only seems to be referring to LOCAL users, i.e., multiple users on the same computer. My issue is that I'm trying to give access to OTHER PCs on the same network if that makes sense. I've attached some screenshots for reference.

Personally, without Homegroup to make it easier, I like to use a NAS and setup access permissions on the NAS instead.

I am having exactly the same problem as Kabigon described. My two computers show up under "Network" in File Explorer. When I click on the other computer it lists the Users (if they have at least one file shared with "Everyone"). But I cannot share a file with a single user. If anyone has any other suggestions I would appreciate the info.
Brink, if no one comes up with a Windows 10 network solution I may end up with a NAS.
