If you disconnect both of from wireless does the direct connection then work? The problem is the direct connection is on another subnet so while you have wireless it will look for it via default gateway unless you setup a route cmd

You have not said how you had the computers set up to work in their direct cable network. If you explain what the arrangements were then somebody might be able to suggest what has gone wrong.
I used to use a direct cable connection between Windows 7 & Windows XP. During the early Windows 10 "Preview" period I tested my setup for Windows 10 & Windows 7 as well as for Windows 10 & Windows XP. Whilst I have not had any reason to even look at my notes for three years I can recall that the main elements were:-
- Set the same Workgroup name on both.
- Create an Admin account on both with the same username & the same password.
- Set network adapter TCP/IP properties manually {including making use of DNS entries to achieve a Private network permanently}.
- Enable various services such as SMTP
- Open various ports associated with services such as SMTP.

Removing Win 10 64 bit - Installing Win8.1
Hi,
Some weeks have passed and I find myself extremely disappointed with win 10 - 1803, to the extent that I am seriously considering removing it and doing a clean install of windows 8.1. Would welcome any advice anyone can offer on the viability (or not) of doing so. If anyone knows of any adverse consequences could you please advise me. Many thanks - Bob Deb.
PS Although I have done it previously, I can't work out how to post new thread in win 10 forum. Would appreciate advice or assistance in how to do it. Thanks again.
