10 Home Wi-Fi issue on older desktop

    Hi guys,

Just registered, been on the 7 forums for a while. I've just installed 10 Home on a desktop I built ages ago and gave to my mother (it was running XP and the time has come etc) and I can't for the life of me get the Wi-Fi working. The mobo does not have built in Wi-Fi so I am using a Belkin dongle. I have the proper disk for this.

The driver installs correctly, the dongle is detected, present in device manager and in network adapters. In network adapters it has a red cross next to it, but is enabled. In device manager it says this device is working properly. There is no wifi icon on the taskbar. I ran services.msc to see if anything relevant was stopped, WLAN auto-config was stopped and set to manual so I started the service (successfully) and set it to automatic. The service is now running but no change even after a reboot. I find this weird as the adapter is being detected but it's as if it won't let me use it. Anyone have any ideas?

First, disable the wifi adapter, then restart your PC, then re-enable it. If that still doesn't work, post the output from ipconfig on your PC. We may end up having to play some additional games after that, too.

Thank you for that Ed, I will do that tomorrow morning. I had a feeling it wouldn't be straight forward, none of the problems I encounter ever are!

A lot of adapters disable wireless services of Windows and use there own in which case there will be util from the makers you use to connect instead of using the Windows one

Ok, here's where we're at. I tried disabling the adapter, rebooting and re-enabling. No change. I've taken some pics which will hopefully be of use :

Except I can't upload them! When I select them for upload they don't appear, I've tried a few times?

Ok I guess the pics were too large so I've cropped them and made them PNG.

    Welcome to tenforums @SD60659

Disabling then re-enabling will just use the same drivers/settings as before.

When I've had a problem with a non-working usb device (often a memory stick) the solution was to use Device Manager to delete the device, not just disable it, then let it discover the device again. Second time round the drivers/settings would be loaded correctly.

Please describe what happens when you double-click the adapter in Network Connections.

what is the actual make/model of the wifi adatper?

I think the issue is with the OS and the dongle OS compatibility. You may need a new wifi adapter.
