Can't change from public to private

I've two refurb Dels running windows 10 1709. I initially hooked up to my home Wifi for software and windows registration but the machines will be used in a charity horse show office offline. Removed the USB Wifi for the rest of the work. Need to connect for printer sharing using a wired hub. When I get to home group I get a "need to be set to private" message. If I go to the internet connection I just get a metered service switch. I used regedit to set the to network profiles ( 2, one the home wifi and the other I don't know) to private and got no change in behavior. Any help? Or is there a better way to do print sharing? My printers are not wireless. I am not a windows 10 guy. Use 7 on my personal equipment.

    welcome to TenForums @Christopher01

If you open Settings > Network & Internet > Ethernet and click on the ethernet connection to change its settings, you will only see the option to choose between Public and Private while you have the ethernet cable plugged in and you have a working connection. If there's no active ethernet connection, you'll only see the 'metered' choice.

This is a point to point system. Two computers and a printer. Does this mean I likely have a bad hub?

If its just 2 pc and printer with no internet were do they get their IP from. Dont use homegroup as its being removed now so it will become a problem at some point

In the past ( windows XP ) I’ve always been able to connect through a wired hub. I suppose I assumed that the hub took care of it.

Might have set up a static ip manually

Well, set it up more than ten years ago. Maybe I manually set a static ip or something. Long time ago. I have a WiFi router that is a lot newer. If I have two lan ports on it I may try that too.

I ran into this problem today after upgrading to Build 1803. I tried going to the properties page and only had the Metered Connection setting. I Reset Network from the bottom of the Network Status page in settings and it came back.
