    Two more fun ones.

Using my laptop (which I've just renamed, rebooted), I opened Network and looked at Kids. Well...this is what I saw:

Another "1803" broke my home network-kenlap-looking-kids.jpg

THAT is a friggin' mess!!! No, those folders don't really exist.

Kids looking at Basement sees duplicates.
KenLaptop looking at Kids sees duplicates.

Mess number 2: I took that screenshot from my laptop and tried to transfer it, via the network, to Kids Desktop. I was denied. "Destination Folder Access Denied"

I have double-checked: The Kids Desktop is set to share with Everyone, Read and Write. The Security tab permissions are all set to "Allow", except for "special permissions" which is shaded out.

    ???

Edited to add: okay, at the bottom of all those duplicate folders is one called "Users". I selected that, I found "Kids" (So, Network/Kids/Users/Kids), and that had Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Music, and Video. I was able to transfer FROM Ken Laptop TO Kids Desktop that way.

Interestingly, using the above screenshot (Network/Kids/Desktop) even though I was UNABLE to transfer from Ken Laptop TO Kids Desktop, I was ABLE to transfer FROM Kids Desktop TO Ken Laptop.

Is it just me, or is this network stuff a bit too convoluted?

OMG what a mess. Did you reboot all the computers you are working with right now? I think it would be best if you started with one computer for now. Take any computer you want with 1709 and leave the Homegroup. Then open Computer Management. Expand the Shared Folders. Click on Shares. In there right click and stop sharing on any folder you have shared leaving the default shares alone. Now right click in the open space and click on New Share. Follow through the wizard and select the folder, change the share name you want to be seen on the network for this folder (top box), click next and at the bottom toggle Customize permissions. Click the Custom... button and make sure all sharing and security permissions are correct in there. Click OK to close that. Then click Finish. Then I would reboot the computer you just did this on and also reboot the computer you are viewing from. See if the many duplicates go away.

If this works properly, you can then go to each computer and set the shares using Computer Management. You will notice it has a box you can check at the end to setup another share. This might be handy.

We crossposted. I edited my post, just above yours. I'll copy that edit, here:

To answer your first question, each and every machine is freshly rebooted.

I'll do what you suggested and come back.

Try this easy fix. In the Cortana search box type 'network status' and hit enter. When the status screen comes up, scroll to the bottom and left click "Network Reset". After a moment it will want you to restart your computer. Do so and your networking will be repaired! There's no need to modify anything else on the computer. 1803 does not have a "home network" any longer and the stuff remaining from your past version is causing your problems. 1803 networking is superior to past versions.

Thanks. That's just for the 1803 computer, right?

Here's a picture of one of the 1709s:

It seems that Access Denied is getting close. This mess is what I see when I access this computer (Basement) from the others. If I right-click anywhere on that window (Computer Management/Shared Folders/Shares), I do NOT get the option to stop sharing. Instead, I can View, Export, Help (or, depending where I click, rearrange the list).

I think this image shows...part...of the issue.

Yes, that will positively repair your 1803 computer. Remember, no home network exists on 1803. You can be on one for 1709 but won't be able to anything with it.

You can also try going into the sharing options and setting it to enable file sharing for 40- or 56-bit encryption instead of 128-bit. (Some Windows 10 machines don't like 128-bit).

The best thing is to have all the machines on 1803. Upgrade one at a time, perform a network reset on it and insure you can connect properly to it from other 1803 machines before doing the next one. Don't modify the operating system!

If you cannot right click them to stop sharing like this:
    Attachment 188968

I would try removing them using Homegroup to start. See if that works. If you have too, join back the homegroup and choose to share nothing. We are getting close to the bottom of the mess for sure.

-- You are doing all this as an Admin, correct?

EDIT: If the homegroup fails to remove them, we can try turning off all file and folder sharing to see if they go away.

    In reverse order...

Yes, I'm doing all this as an Admin.

The screenshot you made? It shows options I don't have. I checked on two computers, and my two are different than yours. I do not get "Stop Sharing" or "Properties" on the popup menu that appears when I right-click. (Two for two: Shrug.)

As an experiment, on Kids (see the image upstream about 6 posts), the "spam" was all based on a "Pictures" folder. It showed about 24 of them. I looked in the folder; it was NOT the real pictures folder. It was another location with "raptor" in it. Delete. Reboot. No more multiple ~ folders. I placed the "Pictures" folder back. Reboot. Still no more ~ extras. That is an option... (Nuke it from orbit. )

Looking at Basement, the ~ folders are based on "Music" and "Pictures". I'll delete 'em.

Something is messed up for sure. Once you get the duplicates removed. Can you try topcat7736 suggestion on the 1803 computer. Open Settings, type Network Reset in the search box. Then reset and reboot. It will ask you after reboot if you want to enable being seen on the network, click yes. If you had made any changes to the TCP/IP like a static IP or DNS will have to be changed back to what you had.

I have to think Homegroup did the sharing (of course) with a SYSTEM account or something that is blocking you from changing it. I think if you want to use Computer Management you will have to setup Homegroup again and remove all the shares. I will do some more digging on removing Homegroup shares in case we need to go that route. I never used Homegroup so it is all new to me lol.

I did the network reset on the 1803 computer. Sigh.

It does not see ANY computers. It does see some other stuff (printer/scanner, bluray player, router). I've only been running the 4 computers, as listed in post 1. Each one has been signed out from the Homegroup.

Not one of the 4 computers can see any other one anymore.

This does not strike me as progress.

Edited to add: after several reboots, my laptop can see Kids, and Kids can see laptop. Basement and KenII are invisible to all others, and vice versa. Up to 2 out of 4.
