    Why Did I Suddenly Lose Computers on The Network?


    We've got a home LAN. Five machines.

    I'm only talking about 2 of them right now.

    They are connected via a wifi broadband Telstra modem/router or 'gateway' as they call it.

    Every day I copy files between the two of them. Today they can't see each other. Don't show up in Explorer file tree under network.

    The only thing I've done is configure the router with a password for admin. It is a Telstra 800 gateway.

    Both machines access the internet fine.

    Both machines do show the other machine under 'media devices' on the explorer 'network' page. So they are aware of each other.

    Strikes me as weird behaviour.

    Can anyone explain to me what's happening?

    If the computers that are not showing up in the network are running the April update for Windows 10 version 1803 there is a service that is not running causing this.

    You need to set to Automatic start:

    Function Discovery Resource Publication

    Right click the Start button and click on Run near the bottom of the menu that shows. Type services.msc in the Run box and press enter to open the Services List. Scroll down until you find those Function Discovery Resource Publication. Set it to Automatic. Then right click and start it. That PC will now show up. You need to do this on all computers in the Network that are running April update 1803.

    Due to changes in the system security, (Wanacry), removing SMBv1 and the removal of Homegroup - the changes above is the way to go, but you can also use the old system type the computer name and shared folder name in the form \\server\share or could map a persistent network location, to your often used share, on each system

    I am expecting a future update to correct this issue but not sure if it will be just the automatic start of the service or some totally new system

    removal of Homegroup
    What's this? Is the Homegroup thing not working any more? That would explain some things down here....

    Homegroup was a lot of trouble for a system that never really took off with users - and so Microsoft depreciated it
    deprecated. that's a fancy new word nowadays on the computer scene, eh? So this means I should not try to use the Homegroup we've got set up - that doesn't seem to be doing it's job anyway? How to set up our LAN so's the kids can have their Minecraft servers working? Should I start a new thread for that, is it worth it?
