I had the same problems with my WorkGroup (3 PC's - 2 wired and 1 wireless)........... I tried all the suggestions with no luck.......... the PCs would disappear on the network at random no matter what I would do......... rolled them all back to 1709 for now......... Microsoft needs to get their heads out of their rears and fix this mess.......... rather than concentrate on how they can spy on you today for profit.

    reinstalled

I actually reinstalled 1709 on both computers, switched to slow ring of updates with 365 days delay and my network works like a charm

Before today 1 computer was 1709 other one is 1803. Everything was good including file sharing & remote desktop. As soon as both is 1803, I am facing the same issue and followed above advice. No resolution.

I'd like to add one more tidbit that clued me in: check to see if you have lmhosts enabled in services. I disabled it to have my network running on tcp/ip only without netbios. That killed the ability to access any computers/shares on the network. Turning it on and disabling netbios on each connection solved that problem.

Could this be SMBV1 not being installed in 1803? That's what bit me. I enabled it in Turn windows features on and off and my network connections worked again.

Just registered to say thanks for the info here. I spent most of the day trying to get my small network working again after the windows update. I could see the share on the network but could not access the folders despite it working for the last few years. I made sure the services were running and the advanced sharing options were correct and the share folders had correct permissions, everything seemed right but still no joy accessing files although I could ping the other computers. Final solution was simply renaming the PC's on the system, after changing the names I can access everything as before. After changing the PC names, I tried renamed them back to what they were before and had same issue with no access to the folders. After renaming the PC's again all is working. Thanks it's something I would not have thought to do without reading this thread.

Renaming my main PC is something I had to do on a clean install. It would not work at all until I did that. Truly weird

I am glad the information helped. :)

Ok, first lets make sure the discovery is working properly. There are 2 services that should be running but for some reason in 1803 they never run and cause networking issues.

You need to set two services to automatic (delayed start):

    Function Discovery Provider Host
    Function Discovery Resource Publication

Open a Run box, (win key + R) type services.msc and press enter to open the Services List. Scroll down until you find those two. Set them to automatic (delayed start). Then right click and start them both. That PC will now show up.

You will need to do this on both machines if they are both on 1803.
So this worked like a charm.
    Thanks a million!

In another discussion on another group, about the same problem, one suggestion was to start
FDRP and set it to Automatic (not Automatic Delayed Start).

Your suggestion to start both FDRP and FDPH and set them to Automatic Delayed Start causes
me to ask what is the difference between Automatic and Automatic Delayed Start ?

    Thanks,

    rs

Delayed Start means it will not run as the computer boots. It will run after booting with a delay as to not add more to the boot process. I have mine set to delayed start and once completely booted up, my network is running correctly.
