Folder/Drive sharing fubarred after 1803 upgrade...

    Hi Guys,

I've had many problems with sharing since the 1709 update - was fine before that. Now I've upgraded my PCs to 1803, more issues (Thanks MS)...

I've shared the "D:" data partitions on my three PCs, with full access for everyone, password protected sharing turned off, network discovery on, etc, etc.

None of the shares show up in Windows explorer navigation pane after the 1803 update.

However, if I manually type in the \\server\share names into the explorer address-bar, they pop up in the navigation bar, but only for the duration of the Windows Explorer session - I have to manually retype the name of each server/share each time I start Windows Explorer - not the ideal situation.

Does anyone have any suggestion I can try?

    Cheers,

    Mike.

    Hi,

Thanks for the info... I've given it a whirl and it looks okay.

I had to manually get the share to pop up, then map it and it looks to be working.

Might take a bit of getting used to, as I've been going through the network icon for the past 10 years!

    Cheers,

    Mike.

You need to set two services to automatic (delayed start):

    Function Discovery Provider Host
    Function Discovery Resource Publication

Right click Start, click on Run towards the bottom. type services.msc in the Run box and press enter to open the Services List. Scroll down until you find those two. Set them to automatic (delayed start). Then right click and start them both. That PC will now show up. Do this on each of your PC. Then your network will display as you like.

    Hope this helps. :)

Just create a batch file net use n: \\ pcname\ sharename save it as map.cmd and run at start of double click to connect

Thanks so much for the help and suggestions guys. This has solved a problem that's been giving me headaches for a loooong time...

Mapping the share to a drive appears to have resolved all of the issues I've had. See this thread, which explains the problems I've had with shares and Windows 10, if you're really keen:

Network sharing problem between desktops and laptop - Windows 10 Forums

The mapping is something I'd never even considered, but it seems to be a simple, elegant and bullet-proof solution (so far!).

    Cheers,

    Mike.

    @mingle You're welcome.

You could still try the method @Access Denied explained in this thread, although networking via the Network browser can be somewhat unreliable. I've had various success, by enabling all the required services.

Network Maps works the best for me. Sometimes you might get a notification during boot up that a network share is not available and the icon shows as unavailable, but if the computer is online you should still be able to access the share.

press Start type Windows Features (Turn on Windows Features)
Scroll down to SMB 1.0, check the box and install, reboot and back to normal.

Found this elsewhere and wanted to share (pun intended)

NO NO NO NO (Yes, I'm shouting.)

Over a year ago now, MS issued a security alert telling everyone to turn off this service, in response to a malware attack type. Microsoft Security Bulletin MS17-010 - Critical | Microsoft Docs
