I thought that I might have found the problem; alas,, I had not. I entered John-PC, the profile name, and the password for John-PC into the credentials. tried to access John-PC from John-PC1, did not work.

Finally noticed the See details error, which gave me 0x80070035, which led me to go check sharing on John-PC; I thought I had done that, had not, took care of it.

    Checked John-PC1, which was shared.

Tried to access John-PC from -PC1, same problem, same error code

Look under advanced sharing at the All Networks dropdown, at the very bottom, turn off password sharing...

Thanks for joining in. I thought that I had already posted that I had done that. Alack and alas, I did so yesterday, which had no effect.

Refering back to post 6 have you set permissions on the folder using NTFS

    On John-pc1

    from a cmd prompt type

    net use s: \\John-PC\c$ /user:john password
change john to login name on that pc that is admin and password put the actual password

You might also try changing the workgroup and rebooting each machine...

    1. Again I have two computers, John-PC1 (mine), and my wife's, which is John-PC. Thus, on John-PC1, in the credentials box, do I enter John-PC, plus the user name and password for that computer? Somehow, this does not make sense to me, but I am not a network user; it would seem that if my supposition is correct, and if there are at least three computers on the network, I could only access one of them.

    2. Just found out that the printer, which is set up as Wi-Fi, prints from both computers. Its software is on John-PC1, but on John-PC, the Windows 10 update removed the marking as the default printer.

Hmm, that first statement cannot be accurate, there has to be at least a partial software installation on John-PC, else I could not have marked it as the default. It has been a few years since I set up the printer, but I do recall that once in a while, John-PC installs something for the printer by itself when a problem has arisen.

    3. Yes, both John-PC1 and John-PC show up in File Manager/Networks (at least when I remember to wake up John-PC, the user thereof being away teaching school.

    4. One thing I have read, including a few minutes ago is that if, in network settings, you disable the use of passwords, you ought not need to worry about credentials. I disabled that setting on both machines yesterday, to no avail.

    5. No list of the changes I have made, but I am sure that they were all in the use of Share in File Manager and elsewhere;. That does not seem to me to have any bearing on this credentials problem.

    6. I recall seeing that both machines are on the private network, which is the only one I have. Were that no correct, could John-PC print? Does it not use that network to send the print command via wi-fi to the printer? Printing on John-PC1 worked as soon as the Win10 update was complete, so obviously it was still marked as the default printer.

    7. Working backwards (I am good at that...), am I even close on my number 1 supra?

    1. Yes network address is John-PC, the user name is the user you are trying to sign on to, these are the user names you log in with, yes the password for that user.

    2. The printer is installed on both machine and they see it as a resource. Would be different and sharing would be required if printer was physically attached to one PC and that PC had to be on to print.

    3. Great start, some people do see the devices.

    4. I must assume that is correct, I never disable passwords but then it means questions 1 can be discarded.

    5. If you right click Documents on John PC for the user you are trying to share, click Properties, click Advance Sharing, place a check mark in the upper left corner to share and click okay. Test on John-PC1

    6. You can print on Public network. Not sure if PC's are wired or wireless and really it doesn't matter as long as you are using the Private designation. Start => Settings => Network and internet => scroll down right hand side, click on Network and Sharing center. In panel that opens it tells you public or private under "View active networks"

Samuria suggestion has you map a drive which is an alternative and if I read you correctly you've done what DMHolt is suggesting.

Are both your machines on 1803? If one is earlier is Homegroup still running on that device?

I really needed something else to add to my frustration:

    1. After several tries on John-PC1, I finally got the net use to run, after several attempts gave me nothing but the syntax menu for the command. However, when it did finally work, this is what I got:

    net use s: \\John-PC\c$ /user:John password
    System error 1219 has occurred.

Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed. Disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again.

I have not only no understanding of that, I can safely state that I have a negative understanding of it....

    2. I then went to John-PC, and tried perhaps six to eight times to get the command to work. It never did, it always gave me the syntax menu. I entered the information using a print-out of the command shown above,, changing the data where needed.

At that point, tired of constantly getting nowhere, I am back to find out what you can do to help me; my thanks are--or should be--implicit.

Run the cmd again but first run this from a cmd prompt

net use /delete * it should then connect

"Victory belongs to the most persevering" Napolean Bonaparte (Or perhaps "to the most perspiring" would be more apt.)

    1. I renamed the workgroup as suggested, rebooted.

    2. In John-PC-1, I now had two entries in File Manager/Network for each computer.

    3. In John-PC, I had no entries in Fire Manager/Network.

    4. Caledon Ken provided instructions for fixing that in this thread, which I ran.

    5. I then found that I had entries for both computers in John-PC file manager\network, AND (Yay!) I could access John-PC1 from John-PC, and single entries in John-PC1.

    6. I could not access the Documents folder in Joh-PC from John-PC1; that was easily fixed by adding 'Everyone" to the Share tab in File Manager.

I have not yet tried to reset the two computers to require passwords for sharing, If that does not work, at least then I will know that the problem is with Windows Credentials, so I can concentrate on that single problem, now that I have, with thanks to you, established file sharing in Workgroups.
