How to share files now there's no Homegroup?

At the risk of sounding stupid, now 1803 has removed Homegroup, how do I share/transfer files over to other computers on a network/linked up to the same router? The Homegroup never worked properly anyway, probably due to Windows Firewall being on, but sometimes certain computers/laptop would show up anyway and I could transfer across. Now it doesn't appear to work at all. One computer can see my laptop, but access is denied, whereas another pc can see the others and access it, but the folders are blank.

Like one computer can now see my laptop and contents, yet it can't detect the other computer etc. So ****ing stupid that Microsoft can't even sort out something as minor as this.

It reverts back to workgroups which has worked for years you create shares on the PC set everyone to have rights and then set NTFS permissions on the folder and your good to go

What's the best way to do that? Click on certain folders and 'give access to specific people and then Homeusers read/write'

For Shares simple

A : Windows systems (all windows systems in the network).
1) on all windows machines set the HDD's or directories to shared
2) enable Network discovery.

B) Windows to other systems (including windows)

1) If the non windows systems are not brand spanking new then in the Windows programs / features enable SMB1 and uncheck the box that disable SMB1 if it thinks it's not needed -- note on Windows 1803 the auto disable SMB1 doesn't exist.

2) If there's still a problem with Non Windows devices then ensure in SAMBA (smb.config) that any reference to Maxprotocol is commented out.

Windows homegroups were always a dog anyway. Not saying R.I.P to those. !

For Windows : on the HDD's you want to share go to properties and select sharing - then you can add users plus permissions.

I've been through this B/S loads of times with Windows updates --it does actually work -- Windows Networking has never IMO been its strong point even as far back as Windows 3.11 !!!

Anybody old enough to have run this : (still works as a VM).

Think I've kind of sorted it. Only weird thing is, is sometimes the computers on the network show up, sometimes they don't!

I re-installed Windows 10 on my main computer, and it can't seem to find the other/older computer linked up to the network in the other room properly. For example, the older one can usually find my main computer fine and I can access the folders I wish for it to do, but when it's the other way round, my main one can find the older one, but the folders I gave access too (everyone read/write), are empty?! Strange.

I worked that bit out. I turned off the 'password protected sharing' option and they could find each other, only one computer couldn't properly access the other as I said, lol. The folder was empty. I clicked on the folders and asked them to 'give access' to everyone, read and write, too. Might be a Windows Firewall issue. Can't be bothered to turn it off though and see.
