If you turn off AutoConnect in wifi settings, can you select the connection and manually connect?
No. And it's exactly the same in W7 on the same laptop.

Try using a free wifi analyzer to see what security and other info for the closest connections.

Both netowrks are locked and I have the password given to me by neigbhours, so they are correct, that's not the issue, and I already mentioned that the one further away works. So what exactly does this do?

It can show you if the signal strength is too low for you to connect, see the security setting for each and the channel they are operating on. You can compare settings of two connections to see what is different.

I think they are both set to WPA2, but I'll give it a try. Which software do you recommend? I know nothing about these things.

I have an adapter in a desktop computer, in windows 10 the device recognizes it as plug and play, I clarify only windows 10, for lower operating systems I have to include its driver by which I have to call the drivers some files with extension .info and others. In the same way you have to locate in the wifi device locate the name download your driver correctly for the architecture of your system that you currently use, try another pc to see if it gives you the same problem.
