I was having similar problems seeing computers on the network. This solved my problems. I'm not using a NAS or home network, just the network explorer.

I don't think SMB1 is much of a risk running in VM. They are suggesting mapping the network drives, I have done that also and they show up every time. But the networks sometimes don't show and you do a reboot and they show, I have been patient, but I think its time for them to step up and fix the damn thing.
Yes, I wasn't too keen on turning Samba on, but it worked! And yes, the unpredictability of how the network manifests on any given day is frustrating. Also, if for example one sets file sharing on in Network & Sharing options, one should not have to tick any options hidden elsewhere, surely. There needs to be a discrete place to say "Yes, see my machine, and yes, see these folders etc".

Thanks to all for their contributions and good luck. I turned Samba on on my PC upstairs, rebooted, rebooted the served W7 PC downstairs and it could see my PC again. So that's better (as long as it lasts!)

I searched everywhere for a solution to this problem and while everyone claimed to be able to solve it, nothing they showed me actually worked.

Check that SMB1 is installed and active. Mine had been partially disabled.

That was the only thing that worked.

The reason SMB1 has been deprecated is that it is a security risk but if like me you need it what can you do.

I think the risk has been overstated - after all we lived for donkey's years without any real issues on 7/8.

Same here. It's been a long time.
