And what happens when you right-click an Excel file, select Open WITH, more apps and check always use this.......; in more apps, look for other apps in this PC and browse to Excel.exe (corresponding with Excel 2007).
I have tried that either it does nothing and if I browse to Excel.exe it just opens a blank Excel 2007 page not the file....

There is some discussion of running both Office 2007 & a later version of Office in
Is it possible to run 2 different versions of Microsoft Office on your computer
Installing Office 2010 over Office 2007 [this one mentions particular difficulties with having both Outlook 2007 & a later Outlook]

If the Office 2016 on your new computer is just a time-limited trial version, your simplest solution might be to uninstall both Office 2016 & Office 2007 and then install Office 2007.

The best I've ever had two versions of Office concurrently on the same system was when I could run any one for as long as I liked even over weeks and many reboots.

Whenever I decided to use the other version the system would go into a fairly long delay, reporting "Setting Up Office nnnn", this could last several minutes before the Application actually was usable.

The automatic opening of files was very hit and miss, often not opening with the correct application even after the "Setting Up" phase had been completed.

So it looks like it maybe that Windows 10 doesn't seem to like two versions of Office running, so perhaps I should remove Office 365 which is a trial supplied by Dell with the PC.

I assume I can download and install another trial version at a later date if I want to.

Or perhaps buy Microsoft Home & Student 2016 which as I uderstand has the same Excel & Word 2016 as in Office 365 but no Outlook which I never use anyway.

I think I will run with both for a while with all the hassle it is causing to help decide which way to go.

    Thanks everyone for your input.

Office 365 is the name of the MS subscription scheme not an Office version. If you subscribe to Office 365 then you will get the latest version of Office which is 2016.

You could choose to buy Office 2016 instead but you would have no entitlement to an upgrade to Office 2017/8/9 in the fullness of time whereas with Office 365 you would.
