Excel asks if I want to save changes when I have changed nothing

I keep reference info in an Excel file that I rarely change, but which I refer to often, so I sometimes keep it open for long stretches of time, and invariaby when I try to close that file I'll get a prompt asking me if I want to save the changes I've made. But I've changed nothing.

So what's the best response to that prompt? My instinct is to say "No!" don't save any changes.

You don't say which version of Excel, but if the document had been created by an earlier version of Excel then there will be changes made when you opened it.

Another possible source of changes would be if the spreadsheet contained references to other spreadsheets. Those would have been updated on opening.

I'd try 'Save as...' and save a second copy with a new name. See if you get the same issues when you open and close that one.

Another 'change' happens when changing the width of columns or height of rows, most of the formatting choices.

Perhaps the functions that the spreadsheets contain are ones that automatically recalc.
Search Excel Help for formula recalculation and also note the explanations under the sub-heading Recalculate a worksheet or workbook manually by using keyboard shortcuts on that Help page.
