    I found C/program files/Microsoft Office/Office16 with files from 2002.....
That's correct. It does not help though [other than being consistent with Office 2016 or later having been installed].

run and pasted "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\OUTLOOK.EXE" which took me to a website
I'm sorry, I have absolutely no idea why that command should redirect to a website. It should either run the command or tell you it cannot find it.
Please browse to that folder to confirm that you have the folder and that Outlook.exe is within it.

When you find it, I suggest you create a shortcut to it on your desktop so that there is something you can rely on to run it for you.

I was able to get to: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16, but there was no OUTLOOK.EXE

The only thing I could find related to that was OUTLOOK that is an application.....

When I ran the file I got the box searching for an email and the "connect" link that went to nowhere....

I'm really sorry this has turned into such a difficult problem.

I think I will go back to seeing if I can open the .pst files I have although that didn't work either.

    thoughts?

But that is exactly what your diagram shows.

No, Outlook does not allow that. Outlook must be started first then it opens pst files.

That sounds right, it does insist that you set up an email account as soon as you run it for the first time.
What went wrong during setting up? I'm not sure what went nowhere. But I assume you mean something happening when dealing with this dialog

    I also note that

At that point there is "connecting to a service" but nothing happens. When I select connect it adds my email and asks for a password......
I now have only my recovered version of "Office Home & Business 2016 for PC click to run"
so I think you might usefully try opening Excel or Word just to see something from 2016 running.
And you could also try an Office repair.
Repair an Office application - MSSupport
    or even a reinstallation
Download and install or reinstall Office - MSSupport

YES..... Sorry, I'm getting myself confused.....

when I click on the CONNECT link I then get a box asking for a password which I don't remember.

When I open both Word and Excel from the app list they work fine. When I look at Account, it tells me the product; Office 2016, was activated for me (my email address).

    Mike,

I do not know your ISP's password reset procedure. You'll need to go to their website to find out. It will almost certainly be a password rest rather than a password recovery procedure.

    Mike,

    OK.

Til tomorrow then [it's feeding time here].

Oh, I have the getting started guides for Outlook, Excel, Word 2016. I don't think they are available online any more. Would you like me to post them?
